New Snake Has Arrived!

Our baby arrived yesterday morning. I'd love to tell you how pretty he is, but I haven't gotten a good look at him myself. Following advice regarding shipping stress, etc., I just loosened the lid of the deli cup & set it down in the viv. When I went back, the cup was empty, no sign of baby snake. Logically, I know he is in there - extremely doubtful that he exposed himself to climb up the sides and escape from the secure sliding-lid tank. Still, the temptation is really strong to reach in and move some things around to see where he's hiding! I suppose that's the downside of setting a tiny hatchling loose in a 30" tank with lots of aspen and several hiding spots - I really can't find him without generating a lot of stress, so I'll have to wait for him to show himself! :shrugs:

[I had to reflect a bit on the life of the pet store hatchling, where people are constantly passing by, looking into the cage, and the workers must reach in and find the snake if anyone expresses even casual interest. . . . It says something positive about corn snake temperament that most of these critters don't strike out in self-defense!]

On a positive note, the temps are staying nice and stable since I put our household programmable thermostat on "hold."

Congrats on the baby. I hope to add an Okeetee baby in 2 weeks. Don't forget pics when you he gives you a photo op.

Pics at last!

We're attempting our first feeding tonight, in his shipping cup. Managed to snap a couple of photos while we had him out, so here's our guy (still anonymous).

And he ate, too!

Checked back after a couple of hours - no pinky, and one very mellow hatchling! Now I have a "mummy I ate my moose" shot, too!

I realize that snakes eating their prey is not a major event in most of your lives (or you wouldn't have so many snakes still living :) ), but after a chaotic couple of days with my first attempt, it was VERY NICE to have something go off without a hitch!
