New Snake Owner

Last week I was in PetSmart and I saw a cute little (maybe 6-8") orange corn snake. Since I have a "thing" for orange I wanted it. But I found that it would cost $120 for the snake + $240 for the habitat + sales taxes = $400+ = YIKES!! :-(

But then I wondered if I could get a habitat on Kijiji for less and I found a much better habitat for only $150 AND it included a 6 year old 3' long snake! :)

I was concerned because there are also 6 cats in the house but I found that they would not be an issue. I'm sure I'll have questions once in a while so this would be a good site to join.

He is very beautiful, congratulations on your pick up!
I'm not 100% expert or sure, but for a 3ft snake he looks a little thin, especially middle to back. It could just be his angle, though.
Good luck with him, I know you will enjoy snake ownership. I certainly do =)

I have to agree with Zeina; that snake is underweight. I'm sure with regular feedings of appropriately sized prey that he'll get up to a proper weight soon.

I would, however, make some changes to your set up. More aspen; corns LOVE to burrow and I'd do closer to 3 inches deep. More hides/cover/fake plants. Give him stuff to roam through and hide under.

Yea, the owner did say that he could be fed more often. He had been skipping weeks.
He was feeding him in a different container. Is this necessary, or advantageous?

Make sure your top is on securely also. The cat will help weigh it down if you can train it to stay on top all the time! If not, you will need to find a way to keep the snake in and everything else out. Corn snakes are real escape artists!

That snake is very skinny. You can see his backbone. He needs to be fed, and snakes don't do well under stress. If I was a snake, and I had a cat peering at me or sitting on top of my cage, I think I would be stressed. I foresee nothing good happening here. But good luck with it. I pray for the poor snake.

Welcome, welcome! :wavey:

I would strongly encourage you to strongly discourage your cats from being on top of the cage. Not only can it stress out your snake having a big scary predator looming over him, I've heard many a story of cats breaking or bending metal cage tops, injuring the snake or enabling its escape.

The top is on VERY securely! I have difficulty opening it myself. The screen is grating of some sort, not window screen.
The cats appear to be ignoring him now that he has been there for several hours. Only two took interest as all, and their curiosity appears to be satisfied. The previous owner had two cats so he should be familiar with them. He should be very happy and relieved that I do NOT have four small children running around and screaming as the previous owner did!
I did get one frozen mouse with him which I am thawing now. The mouse appears to be way too big though. I'm not sure if the mouse was bought when he was bigger, or if they can open their mouths much wider than it looks.
I did get a basking lamp with him but the seller admitted that the 100W bulb in it was too much for him. I already have a 75W bulb but it only produces heat. The room is cool (Maybe 18C/65F) but not cold so I would think that heat would not be necessary.
What do I clean the inside glass with? It could use it for sure but I would imagine that Windex would not be appropriate.

For heat, an under-tank heater is much more appropriate for a corn snake. A lamp is going to suck out all the humidity and corns tend to do better with belly heat anyway.

You are going to need to purchase:

1- The heat mat itself
2- A thermostat to *control* the temperature
3- A digital probe thermometer to *read* the temperature

As for cleaning the class, a washcloth and water, or washcloth and diluted vinegar should work well enough.

He ate the mouse!! :) It was rather interesting to watch too.
Would feeding him smaller mice more often work? He appeared to be having difficulty with the one I gave him but he did manage.
