New to snake ownership

Hello all,

My Name is Racheal and I have wanted a corn snake for several years and I think I am going to get one for my birthday which is April 1st. I want to get a silver queen or something of that color. I do have some questions. :grin01:

Hello and welcome. Looks like we might have lost some of your post but if you can raise human babies you can surely raise snakes. Snakes are probably a bit cheaper and easier as well.

Guess that raises a question, has anyone snake ever kept them awake at night?

Wait till you are waiting for your first pippies to emerge- that will keep you awake at night!!

Hello and welcome!

A Corn snakes a great first pet to start with!

Easy to care for and of fun to have around! :)

Corn snakes are not only great first snakes, and first pets in general... but as far as I'm concerned, they're the perfect pet completely. Quiet, low maintenance, yet still playful and fun. It's like the powers that be took the best parts of dog/cat ownership and goldfish ownership and bestowed the ultimate pet to the world!

I will suggest (and this is as a parent of an 8 yr old who has extra kids in my house several times a week)-consider NOT getting a tiny hatchling since you have young children. The difference a year makes as far as the snake's size is a lot, and if you can find an older snake, you can look for one that's calm and responds well to handling, which, with kids, is necessary (because, trust me-every time your kids have friends over, they're going to want to get the snake out!).

It's a good time of year to search for slightly older snakes-breeders who still have 2012s around need room for those new babies who are going to be hatching soon.

Welcome to the forums and definitely ask away. Questions are always good, especially as a new corn owner. This site has helped me SO much with my baby. And of course, PICTURES. We CRAVE them around here!

I agree with Nythain above. Corn snakes are such amazing creatures. I warn you, they are ADDICTING. Since my baby has been introduced to the household, everybody wants their own corn now!

Well I went to petsmart last night to see what kind of corn snakes they had and I ended up getting a sweet little lavendar (not sure exactly which morph) corn snake. Don't know the sex but I am going to call her a she. Haven't come up with a name yet but I Flora came to mind first. Pics coming soon. Maybe I could get some help figuring out what kind she is.

Flora sounds like a great name. And it's always best to go with that first name that came to mind, makes it more special! Pics are definitely a *MUST* around here, and if the quality is good and you can get the belly too, I'm sure a lot of people here could help you identify her.

I really hope you enjoy her for a long time to come! Just remember that a lot of the sticky threads here contain almost all the info you could ever need, and it's best to familiarize yourself with as much of it as possible as soon as possible.

Congrats on the new baby. Hides and plants can be made easily and inexpensively but I strongly recommend you find the best heating and monitoring equipment you can. Just a piece of advice as you get started. Can't wait for some pics!
