New to Snakes, Need some Advise

Picked up my corn snake today. Here are some pics of him. Hes about 15 inches, so when do you guys think he was born? Sometime early last summer?

Also, i got a Zoo Med UTH, but im not sure how to regulate the tempurature? I got http://www.petco.com/product/6452/P...iles-and-Amphibians.aspx?CoreCat=OnSiteSearch It was the only thermometer they had, should i find a better one online?

Aww gorgeous snake. Have you named it yet?

* I've been told by the good folks here that those stick on thermometers are not very accurate. YOu can get a cheap digital thermometer from walmart for about 10 bucks. Make sure it has a probe so you can monitor the temps directly on the glass over the UTH. You can also get a dimmer switch to attach to the UTH so you can regulate the temps easier as the UTH by itself will likely get way too hot. Or you can buy a thermostat to set the temps as well.

Hey, what temperature should my probe read if its on the glass over the UTH? What should the probe read if its on the top of the substrate?
 
The hottest temp on the glass over the UTH should be around 85 degrees - take 88 as the safe maximum. The top of the substrate will be a bit cooler.
