Hey there, i just got my corn today. I love him, hes awsome. well i bought a frozen pink for him, its now in my freezer. My question, probably a stupid one, but here goes. I have an extra 10G tank that im keeping some crickets in for my beardie, if i put some live mice in there to breed (1m to 3f seems average for a breeding setup) and just feed take care of them, they will most likely breed, correct? well once they do, after about 5 days the pinkies would be ready to be eaten, what is the most humane way of getting them into my freezer? i mean, do i just bag them up, and thrown them in the freezer? or is there a more humane way, without poisoning them?

thanks in advance
p.s. i have experience keeping rodents (hamster, mouse, rat)

Depending on how big your hatchlingis, you might need them sooner than 5 days old. Really small hatchlings need newborn or 1 day pinks.

For killing them, when still pinks with no fur most freeze them. Make sure they are separated and can't huddle together to prolong it.

Once they grow fur then CO2 is the easiest amnd most humane. When they are pinks they are resistant to suffocation so CO2 doesn't work.

Yes my pinkies just get put in a tub then straight in the freezer. With my hatchlings I wait for the pinkies to have their first feed of milk then I take them out.

I also Co2 them once they get hair, I havent had to do any young ones yet the rest get left until they are a bit older.

I give you all credit..I dont think Id have the heart to do it. They are just so cute and helpless. I know when I buy them frozen that they of course were alive and had to be frozen but I just feel so bad for them. I have always loved snakes but never thought I could own one because I love all animals (even mice) equally. I mean, I know it is the circle of life and all. I was always under the impression that snakes would only eat a live mouse. Once I found out you can feed frozen/thawed, I went out the next week (after doing my research first) and bought our very first corn!

I used to have mice as pets so I still feel a little bad when I am defrosting them..They are just so cute.

I know what you mean I felt awful when I first had do it but then you realise the snakes have to eat too.

One of mine always ate live mice but now she is on f/t too and it is so much better for both really no risk to her when she eats them and I find it so much nicer (in a weird way) for the mice too I co2 a load last week and it just puts them to sleep they know nothing about it, rather than dropping them in with the snake and then they know whats going to happen, I could never watch.

I have a question for you. And it may sound stupid too lol! But are you taking the crickets out first? This may seem like it has an obvious answer but I have seen/heard of some people do some really weird things. Just making sure...

And I agree with everyone above. CO2 ing pinks is useless. I freeze the pinks. However I have never thought of them prolonging it by cuddling. I am going to separate mine from now on. =O

By the way, welcome to Cornsnakes.com and good luck with your new baby!

lol

Ya, im gana take the crickets out lol, they will be eaten by the time i actually set up a mouse breeding tank. I work at petco now, so i dont have to worry about keeping crickets at home, im gana be at petco to work anyway, i can just get a dozen every couple days.
