Hi, I have a 5 yr old cornsnake (have had him for 3 weeks now) he started hiding right after his last feed (2 fridays ago). Then turned white, dull color last week. His eyes were milky color until Wed. Yesterday when I got home from work they had cleared up and he was out of hiding looking shiny again. I read that they don't shed their skin till 24 hrs after eyes clear up. So its been over 24 hrs and todays his feeding day but he's hiding in his rock hide and I don't see any skin. So my question is...would they eat their skin or can it take longer than 24 hrs after eyes clear up? Plus he's usually more active right before feeding and he's not. Should I try to feed him today or wait and see about tomorrow?

This is our first corn snake (never had a snake before), and this is our first experience with shedding. Also, how often do they shed? "Larry" is 5 and 5ft long, and very healthy.

Thanks

An adult will shed about three or four times a year, unless you are feeding a lot and they are growing rapidly!

It's okay to just wait till you see the shed before you feed. You'll see him come out and be active shortly before he sheds. They can go longer than 24 hours after they clear.

An adult snake can go a couple months without food and barely notice, so don't worry if he misses a feeding or two while you are waiting for him to shed.

Came home from my son's Volleyball tournament and "Larry" had shed. It's all in one piece. So happy :). We measured the skin and he is in fact 5 ft long. We were told he was when we got him but could never measure him ourselves as he's too fast.

Beware that the skin stretches as it comes off and will be about a third longer than the actual snake.
