My teenage daughter just bought a corn snake after thoroughly researching them on the net. She bought it from a local non-chain pet shop that got it from a local breeder. It must be an Okeetee since it looks just like this one:

It's about 40" long. Looks healthy to me, though it does have a patch of peeling skin--can't tell if it's getting ready to shed or has recently shed, but not completely.

I've got two questions:

1) About how old is the snake?

2) Is the peeling skin a concern?

I can post pictures of the snake, the peeling patch, the habitat, etc. if anyone's interested.

Welcome to the site!

At 40" I would guess your snake is an adult or very close to an adult. They usually reach 36-60" average.

I'm sorry I can't tell you about your shed issue without more info or pics. Perhaps give him a day or two and see if he finishes shedding for you. If not, try putting him in a damp pillow case (inside his viv) overnight.

Welcome Dave, by all means post a few pics.
The age is a guess at best, but at 40" gotta be at least 3 yrs old, which would be considered an adult.
So how long you figure before you're "hooked" :cheers:

Thanks, Mike. It's at least 36"...hard to get an exact measurement without stretching him out, and we're trying not to handle him till he settles in. I'm a little suprised that a dealer would sell a snake that old to a pet shop--though I realize he's got a few good years left. I've always been a snake lover--had a boa many years ago that unfortunately didn't last too long.

I don't have many pictures yet, but here's one of the habitat. Feel free to criticize. Bedding is aspen.

Habitat looks like one of mine! Got that same cave on the left in my creamsicle's viv. Judging from the pic of the snake, I'd say he's in the blue, and should shed soon :cheers:
 
1) Welcome!

2) Nice tank. Critter Cages are awesome.

3) Good setup. Aspen is a very good substrate and good job on multiple hides.

4) Get a digital thermometer at walmart with a probe. They sell them in the smoke detector aisle, or should anyway.

5) You have an adult snake---nicely colored too.

6) Don't worry, you've more than likely got many years left. It's not uncommon for corns to live past 15 years.

7) Can't really tell about the skin. After his settling in period, throw him into a damp pillowcase for a bit if you're concerned.

8) Go to www.serpwidgets.com and then click on apps, and download the snake measurer program. Works wonders.

Nice snake and setup. I agree that your snake looks like he's about to shed. He could be anywhere from two years old on up. My male isn't even two yet, and he's 44" long. I doubt yours is real old though. Can't wait to see some fresh shed pictures. I'll bet he's a looker!
 
hey welcome to the forum.

I agree about him being in shed at the min, i would say 90%sure he'll shed in the next week to 10 days.

My adult female was 46" long (55" shed lenght just before i got her)when i got her and she was 4 years old, if it's definatley a male i would say yous is between 2 and 3 years as the mojoraty of males (not all i know) reach around and above 4ft by the time their around 3. But thats just mho.
 
Welcome to the forums...Hate to sound like a sheep but I agree with what all the above people said pretty much!!!

Looking at the length and thickness of the tail in the photo, I would put my money on it being a he-snake. Once he's shed and settled in a bit, take some good photos of the tail and we'll be able to give you a better guess.

I'm assuming that if he came from a local breeder, that he's be an excess male that isn't needed for breeding anymore. He looks very much an adult to me.

IE: 1.0= 1 male 0.2=2 females 0.0.1=1 unknown sex :cheers:
 
I live in Middle Tennessee (near Nashville). I used to live in Gray (between Johnson City and Kingsport), though.

Tell your daughter she scored nicely, he's a beauty! I'm not so sure he's in blue though...I think that's a bit of glass glare myself...but I'm NOT an expert!
