Hi everyone!!
I am a newbie here! Just got my first corn snake :) He is a 6 month old sun kissed (or so they tell me!!). I had snakes when I was younger, but have never had a corn snake. I am an elementary school science teacher and Merlin is our new classroom pet. I got him through a Petsmart "Pets in the Classroom" grant. We got him on Monday, and I held him for the first time today. He seems very calm and laid back. He seems to be quite social and comes out during the day when the kids are looking in at him. I was afraid it might make him skittish, all those little faces peering in at him, but he seems to be adapting very well. I am planning to feed him tomorrow afternoon when the kids leave so he will have a calm, kid-free weekend to digest. I will post pictures soon! Nice to meet you all :)

Awesome! Sounds like you've got it under control. Definitely get some photos up when you have a chance ;) and congrats!

Hello,
I am also a teacher but High School. We are weighing and measuring our snake. The kids named her Chino ( all the classes voted). For measuring we use serpent widget. Chino does not come out much but she hides where they can find her. Makes them think where she could be.

Welcome to pets in the classroom. I am also a teacher, but my classroom pets are fish. Because my corn is a stay at home snake.

Welcome! We're in TN, too. We homeschool, and I teach ELE and NME prep classes (Latin and mythology), so Wadjet gets a lot of attention from the kids. Alli (my 8 yr old) wants to be a herpetologist, which was why we got Wadjet, and she keeps detailed records on her growth, feeding, and development. I really do think that the snake has spurred more reading, writing, and just plain learning than almost anything else. (I listed "pantherophis gutattus gutattus-1" on our supply list for science with my cover school last year. No one questioned me on it)

My only concern would be to make sure that your school district doesn't do what mine used to-mine had this annoying habit of turning the HVAC system almost completely off over weekends, and that would be horrible for a snake, especially if you're getting the cold snap we are!

I'll also add-I think Wadjet enjoys watching the kids. Or maybe she just figures that she's safer if she knows what they're doing. She's usually out and about, or at least partially out, when I have a group there.

Hello and welcome to the forum...we are former TN people as well (all of our family is still there).
