Newbie "Growth" question

Well, "growth" is the best way to describe it. My question is are my corns "too big"? What I mean is I just bought what the owner considered a "large" 2008 female that is about 26" long. Well, I have 5 other 2008s and only the tiniest male is that small. I just measured my Anery's shed about a week ago and it was roughly 35" long! Also, I bought a Golddust about a month ago that's a year older (2007), she's much thicker than my 08s but they are MUCH longer. The books I've been reading say you know when to breed them by how long they are. Well, my are VERY near that, but don't seem hardly old enough or thick enough. I'm very confused. My 08 Bloodred takes up the entire back wall of her 16q sterilite tub when she lays back there for heat. I think the whole tub is too small for her. poor thing has hardly any room. Any tips on what's going on here? Any reasons to worry? When do I breed these big girls?

There's no such thing as a corn that's too long. Don't breed until they are 3 years old.

I've seen alot of people on here breed at 2 year old though I think they go by a size/weight requirement before they breed. Is this true?

Large females can be sexually mature at 2 years, yes, but it's generally not recommended unless you have lots of experience. If it's your first time, wait until 3 years.

A general rule of thumb: 3 feet, 300 grams, 3 years old.

Also, you do know they require hibernation etc to breed, right? You should do some serious research beyond asking a couple questions.

Cheers/

Oh, and regarding your bloodred, you basically answered the question yourself. If you're concerned, give it some more room. 14q is quite small.

I've been reading over the topic of brumation and considering I live in Alabama (ie. its hardly ever cold here), plus I have no where safe outside to put them for brumation, and because it can be dangerous if they aren't lowered far enough in temp, we've decided to breed them later in the year and without brumation atleast for the next year or so. The ones we are breeding next year are 07s or older, so they are plenty big enough. I was just curious why there is such a size difference between to similar aged snakes. The 08s won't be bred until 2011, even if they are huge for their age.

Genetics can play a large part. If they come from a bloodline that produces smaller than average Corns, then they're likely to be smaller as well, even on the same feeding regime as the larger ones.

There's no such thing as a Corn that's too long, but there is such a thing as a Corn that's too heavy or too wide. An obese Corn will have the same type of life-limiting health risks that you'd see in an obese human.

25-30 inches at about a year old seems like the norm. My girl are all over 30 inches. How do I know if they are obese? Would pictures help ya'll tell?

I think the shed skin is also stretched significantly sometimes...I know it's hard to measure the actual snake, but have you tried that? (Obviously looking at comparisons the actual length doesn't matter).

Where in Alabama are you?

That's a good point. I wondered how accurate it is. Let me try hand measuring all the 08's tonight and see how that goes. I'll let ya'll know.

I know this is a older thread but wanted to let you know bro that the shed of a snake is depending on the snake size a inch or 3-4 longer then the snake.
