Newbie Needing Help...Please

Hello Everyone! I am a first time owner of an Albino Corn Snake that I have had now for one week and have some general questions.

Before buying the snake I did alot of research to find out how I should set up housing, but have not been able to find information on behavior handling and other things to expect.

I bought my Amel. corn snake at Petco... I know maybe not the wisest choice however, the snake was very alert and hadn't been there too long. So far it seems healthy and very docile and I am happy with it.

Here are my questions and I really really appreciate your help.

My snake is only about 12' in and I am unsure the age, any idea? The guy at petco said they had just got them in about a week ago....hmmmm

Also, when I play with the snake it does poop on me at times even and I am really unsure as to why? (perhaps I need to shorten the durations of play time which generally last about 10 mins.)

Finally, any idea how long I should play with the snake and how many times per day?

Thanks in advance ... again I really appreciate your advice.

Peace
Tim

Also wondering how the color pattern changes over time. Now its mostly white- whitish pink and a bit of orange in between the blotches of red.

:)

Thanks
Tim

welcome fellow texan (where at) and get ready for the addiction. the best thing to do is use the search feature towards the top of the page and also check the FAQ's section for answers to alot of your questions. sound like it might be 1-1.5 months old and the pooping can be normal. i would let it settle in for at least 3-5 days after getting it to let it get used to it's new home. since it is still young you might start off playing with it slowly and not very long and gradually work your way up to longer times. also, every day will probably not hurt but it might need a rest for 1-2 days until it gets older. i would imagine that some of the pros will respond and give you better answers. welcom again to the site/addiction and post pics when you get a chance.

Thanks for the quick reply! I am in dallas, TX yeeeehaaaw.

I did make the mistake of handling the snake the first few days it was brought home and it stayed in its hide most of the time there after. However, now its moving around freely and I can only assume it feels somewhat safe in its enclosure. Especially since its sleeping out in the open area of the tank.

However, I could me making a stupid assumption because I really don't know much about how snakes work just judging by the slight change in behavior after a few days.

I do know that sometimes it just rests in my hands a bit and doesn't move much at all. Not sure if this is good or bad but I am open to any advice guys..

I am going to read the FAQ's now so I dont annoy people with recursive question.

Peace
Tim

that is not a problem.........sometimes they rest and sometimes they are restless, just depends on their current attitude. you might also search for "amel" to bring up photos of other members young and old snakes to see how yours will progress.

Mine's probably about 12 inches, and he was hatched in July, if that helps. Of course, they can vary on the basis of feeding and stuff, but if the store only got them in a week before, it's undoubtedly a 2006 hatchling (say, July or August).

Welcome to the site!!!!!!!! There is a lot of information here. Be sure to read the FAQ section in the forums. They answer a lot of questions. There is a search feature that answer many questions also.
There are a lot of great people here. Everybody is always willing to help.

Can't handle snake

We are having issues with our snake pooping on us every time we hold her/have her out of her cage. She is three years old now. Does anyone have an ideas how to correct this? The snake belongs to our 12 year old son and he just doesn't want to hold her anymore and I understand why! Has anyone heard of this happening? Someone told me it was because she's nervous.

i can't really give you an expert answer, but someone here will be able to.............i would recommend though that you start another thread of your own so people can post in it. this one is a little old and most have probably already read it by now, so a new one will get more attention.....and it will be your own. good luck. :)
