I plan on using newspaper and/or paper towel on the base of my aquarium. How many layers should I put down, or does it matter?
 
that doesn't matter, just personal opinion,

your snake will get under them and scrunch them up no matter how many layers you put down hehe, not that thats usually a problem ;)
 
When i need to use it, i will put 3 layers down to help soak up the wee. But it does not really matter too much.
 
Just remember that clean the container at min of once a week. When I was using paper towels before switching to aspen, every time my snakes soiled the paper towel I would thoroughly clean the containers with soap and water.
