Newbie questions!! (UVB, substrate, digestion)

Hey everyone,

Just new to the board (and also new to the corn snake world), and just wanted to drop two questions that likely have been asked many a time, but I would still like to know! :)

I have a green iguana, and these guys require UVB lighting. Now, when I bought my cornsnake, I asked the person if snakes required this, and she said yes. Now, everyone else I've talked to say no, and I haven't come across any online source. So, what would be the consensus on this one?

And also, just did my first feeding (frozen pinkie, defrosted of course), and it went fairly well, no problems. Now, I'm curious as to how long the food stays in the stomach of the snake. Like, it was in there for 2-3 days. I'm confident now that it's defecated now, but I just really have no reference as to how long food stays inside for.

And, last question, I promise!

With regards to substrate, they told me to use the commercial chips (Exo-Terra forest bark). Now I've read elsewhere that pine shavings and newspaper are better choices. Is this true? Did they sell me bad stuff?

I get the feeling that my pet store server was weak in her knowledge overall.

Anyways, thanks for bearing with the rookie questioning, and I look forward to the snake community.

Mike

UVB is not necessary.

2 days digestion is the suggested minimum.

Pine shavings are a bad idea because of the resins and aromatic properties. Stick to newspaper, paper towels, or the best choice aspen shavings.

Welcome to the forum! Hopefully, that wasn't too brief :)

Brevity is perfect when it's prompt and concise ;) Thanks much.
Can I ask what type of snake yours is (in the pic), as that's the same color that mine is!

Welcome to the site!!!!!!!! There is a lot of information here. Be sure to read the FAQ section in the forums. They answer a lot of questions

Aspen is the best. Pine shaving could make your snake sick.

Well, glad to be of some help. The snake in my avatar is a hypo. The colors in that pic might be a bit deceiving due to the lighting. Just so that you don't automatically think your's is a hypo judging from my avatar ;)
