Newbie questions

honest, I'll only get 1
Well, we've had Tigger a few days and I have some questions for you guys.

1. Being about 2 months old, is 1 pinkie a week enough food? I have noticed some are feeding every 5 days and sometimes 2 pinkies.

2. I have a small UTH, a 50w moon bulb, and a reptile UV light (only on in day). My warm side is barely 80 and the cool side is about 75. I am concerned that it is not warm enough. I have another incandescent lamp next to the tank so I put it on today and the warm side got to about 85. Any sugegstions on tweaking heating? Is some of it just based on what he appears to like?

3. Tigger has speant 99.9% of his time in his hide, unless I take him out. Is this normal? Will temp affect his activity level? When I have him out, he is very active.

4. What does the poop look like? We've fed once, and I have seen a small bit of yellowish crumbly stuff one day ago. Is that it???

Thanks for the help!

Hi, I thought I'd have a go at your questions:
1-size, not age, should determine how often you feed. If a snake is looking for more food already the next day after feeding I usually up their portions to two pinkies at that point.
2-It sounds like maybe your UTH is not big enough if you have to add a heat lamp to reach your desired temp, if it was me I'd probably get a bigger one than the mini UTH
3-The cold does make snakes more sluggish, he could be in the hide all the time to stay warm or just feels more secure in there, perfectly normal
4-the poop usually consists of yellow or white crumbly stuff that usually comes out first - fur? But there is also usually a darker part that is more solid as well
hope that helps!

Yeah i agree with shed'n my skin and what he says but as a general rule as my hatchlings hit 15-16 inches long i the up their mice to 2 pinkies at a time if they will take 2 (some will and some wont at this size) For the UTH i use a 17 by 11 inch or a 23 by 11 inch (summer winter) and the temps are table at 84-84 for the warm side, so i would advice getting 1 a size up thats approx 1/3 of the floor space.

Don't worry about the snake hiding as at this time of year if you havent burmated them (hibernation) they sometimes go into semi hibernation, and will be sluggish and may go off their food.
For snake poop have a look at this link as it shows 2 snakes going at the same time and the poop in the picture is normal.

Thanks! I will definitely be saving to upgrade the UTH.

I'm going to have to measure the little guy, but I think he's about 12-15 inches... I may offer 2 pinkies this Wed to see.

After that pic, I think I'm glad I don't have big poop, yet!!! :puke01:
