Newspaper substrate

So what's the deal with this? I have heard different ones say they use shredded newspaper as the substrate in their feeder bins and it works great. My question is does it reallY? Not that I don't believe people, but won't it stink worse with just the newspaper?

It would be great if it did work, because it would be cheap and easy substrate for me. I went to get some kiln dried bedding and the local supply store only has one kind other than straigt cedar, and once I got it home and opened the bag, it smells like it may have cedar in it too. (it doesnt list the contents). I looked at the pellets for pellet stoves and the ones that they carry on it warn against using it for human (??) or animal usaged. So, before I even test it out, what's everyone's opinion.

I cant see a problem using newspaper, my only concern would be the ink when wet. Im not sure if this would effect the snake at all?

The ink on newsprint is vegatable base and won't hurt you if you eat it.

I haven't used newspaper for mice but I have used shreaded paper from my office. It worked just fine. I asked my girls to make sure there was no foriegn matter or garbage in the shreader I didn't have any problem with it, and I raised a lot of mice. The only thing that I didn't like about it was that it was messy. It seems to get everywhere and is hard to sweep up.
