Non-constricting constrictor

nluogameno

Down but not out
I feed my guy, Ramses, pre-killed. Now of course this is much safer and easier then anything else but it does remove alot of the natural hunter aspect from our snakes. Ramses will just sniff around, eventually find the right end, and gulp the mouse down. What I am really getting at is whether or not he is going to ever be fed live mice again or is he gonna lose that killer instinct :twoguns: . I suppose if he is like other domesticated animals, like a cat, he will have no problems stalking and killing a live mouse. Regardless, I still have like 48 frozen mice and I am not going to waste the money that i spent on them. So in conclusion, am I doomed to have a weenie for a pet  or is this just him intelligently :grin01: skipping the constricting phase of his eating process?

The prey is not moving so the snake needs not to constrict it and the snake knows this. But the snake is not gonna lose its killer instinct, thats why its called instinct. If you ever put a live mouse with him, which i suggest you dont do, he will constrict the crap out of it, so no your not gonna have a weenie as a pet, snakes are just naturally bad a**, lol. Sometimes Pearl, my snow corn, she still likes to constrict the fuzzie while eating it. Its fun to watch, and my other corn, Blue contricts when the pinkie is a lil big in order to help force it down.

Have you tried dangling the mouse in front of your snake. Basically pretending that its alive. You'd be suprised to see that it works sometimes. My one snake goes nuts over every single meal. It doesn't matter whether its dead or alive, he thinks its alive and constricts the crap out of it. Another thing you can help to make him think its live, is to dry it off after you defrost it. Also make sure that its very warm. A mouse's natural body tempature is up over 100*F. And then again, some corns just don't constrict. My little baby Opal who is 3 months old, doesn't constrict yet. I hope these hints help.

You know what they say about pets and their owners... :grin01:

All jokes aside, I wouldn't worry about it. I have always fed primarily f/t and none of my snakes constricted. However, on the occasions that I did feed live pinkies I only ever had one snake that would constrict. Most of them still just swallowed without constricting. The story would probably be different if the mice were larger and/or moving around a lot more. Still, I wouldn't risk feeding live prey just to have a chance at seeing your snake constrict. Just my opinion.

Mine is a panzy

So yea... my snake is a panzy as well haha. His first feeding he didnt constrict and the pinkie was giving him a little of a hard time. So the second time he smartened up and wrapped it like crazy and was fine. However, go to feed him this past thursday and he just casually crawls from the back of the pinkie to the front and lunges without constricting yet again. I just laugh, my gf calls him a wuss when he acts like that, but regardless its fun to watch em' gulp them down. Hey at least they are eating right? I love corns... haha

i thought my snake was a wimp until i dangled the mouse over him and zoomed the mouse round the cage then he went crazy!!

My snake will only constrict if I defrost the mouse in front of it- It gets really agitated because it can smell it but not eat it XP

My guy is 5 and he's only just started to constrict his already dead prey. Actually, he's only recently started taking it from my hand. He was a very shy eater and he wanted the room darkened, it laying on the ground and you out of the room. Something tells me Kathy L doesn't feed hers this way, but that's the only way he would eat. So catered to him, I did :)

Lady G on the other hand, once she decided to eat, did a fine job of killing her already dead prey. Throwing both her and the poor pinkie all over the cage, actually moving the critter keeper sometimes. Then she would proceed to eat it backwards... the mouse, not her. :) She did that until she moved up to hoppers, then suddenly she figured out that it was easier nose first :)

Not sure why a snake would have to have a "killer" instinct... I mean, we pamper them something terribly :D

Sometimes there's nothing funnier then a ft with ring marks. Some of mine constrict some don't. I've had young nonfeeders take live pinks down without constricting. I also have a shy feeder if your in the room I'm not eating. Something tells me it's just a women thing.
