Not about ivory boobs, but more interesting. Basic starting-out questions.

Wow, WAT...I think you went a bit over board there. Cost of mice has already been covered (and in a much nicer way, I might add). Please tone it down a little bit. He is doing the right thing by ASKING for help.
Thanks. ^_^' :)

Don't forget about substrate!!! If you search the site for substrate there are lots of great posts =) And also don't forget about a deli cup of something to feed your snakie in =)

Ok, just my two cents.. LOL, ive only had my salazar for about 2 weeks but ive done lotsa research and heres basically what you need.
You can start with something small like a 10 gallon for a hatchling, thats what i have. CHeep $10 heating pad stuck under one half of the tank.. hide box on the cold and hot side, water on the cold side, and substrate. Reptile carpet, aspen shavings, etc.. is good substrate. They like to burrow, so the aspen is good.

Eventually yes you will need at least a 20 gallon long. I have been pricing them, while the tank itself can be found cheep at yardsales and such, ive been pricing themand they have really nice reptile tanks with built in locking screen tops for about $60 for a 20 gallon. Not bad really considering the lids can sometimes be expensive if you want the locking kind.

Mice, yes you have to feed mice, but they aren't really that expensive, whats $1/week? Pinkies around here are about 60-70 cents apiece and i just bought 15 frozen pinkies from my Pet store for about 8 bucks. Of course, i had to have them ordered, if you cant find frozen, talk to the managers of local pet stores and ask them to order frozen for you, most likely they will.

and thats about it.. hope i helped a little bit.

btw.. i hate how everyone always tells you to search, it would take just as much time to type some advice in as it does "do a search".. forums are so you don't have to search.. lol. This is the only forum ive ever been in where people don't answer the question, and just tell you to search.

Or you can build one for less if you want to keep your options open. I just built a 36 x 12 x 12 viv for about $40, but there are enough materials left over that I could build another one for an additional $5-10.

I just bought a 10 gallon with a lid at petsmart. I think it was about 25.00 bucks. I have a 20 gallon long that has a ball python in it right now that will eventually be the corn snakes home. I paid 2 bucks for a live mouse for my ball because she refused the frozen one. Pets are really expensive. Thats why I work alot. Good luck with your snake. I really like both of mine.

Well, looks like you got some good information and responses to your post. So as CAV would say, "time for harassment". This was in no way more interesting than ivory boobs :grin01:
I am pleased to see someone else got views and responses over the word "BOOBS" Cheers!

I used plain white tileboard (shower surround) with no texture (makes it easy to clean) for the walls, floor, and ceiling - cost about $10 at Lowes or Home Depot. I live in an apartment, so I don't have a big work space...One of those places cut the tileboard for me, but the other wouldn't (don't remember which was which though). I just used 2x2s to frame it, and then put the tileboard on the inside. I've seen these with tileboard inside and out and it looks a lot nicer, but this was basically a test cage for me (the real one will come when I build a viv for a RTB in a couple months) so I didn't bother doing the outside. You can seal it with silicone or LiquidNails.

For ventilation, I got two 4"x12" undereave vents (basically furnace vents with mesh on the back so the snake can't crawl through it) and mounted them on the back. The UTH works fine through the bottom piece of tileboard, and the only problem I've had so far is mounting the glass on the front. I tried using hinges, but it's hard to get them to adhere to the glass so I'm still looking for something that works better until this method finally gives out on me...lol. Luckily, I have two nylon straps used to hold the glass up (the hinges are on the bottom, so that it opens like an oven) and they're working fine right now. My suggestion would be to use plexiglass or install a slide track.

forgot to mention, that $10 for the tileboard was for the entire 4'x8' sheet, which is why I have enough left over to make another one. The extra cost would just be in buying more 2x2s, glass, etc.
