I decided to take a stab at breeding mice, so I went out and bought a male and female. They are in a 10 gallon viv. When I bought them, the sales person said that she wouldn't be ready to breed for another week. It has now been 6 weeks, and nothing. If I didn't know better, I would think that the male (like most males I know, myself included) is starting to get "frustrated" with her. He will chase her around the tank and bite her back, tail, and genitals. She tries to get away, but it's only a 10 gallon, so there isn't a lot of room to run. I do think it's amusing when she uses the wheel to try and escape.... :grin01: Any suggestions on how to get them to breed? Do some mice just not reproduce? If they don't breed soon, I'm getting rid of them. I want breeders, not pets. I have enough cages to clean without adding this stinky one to the mix. Thanks for your help.

It sounds like yours (the male at least) is too aggressive. I had a male like that & he made a nice snack for one of my snakes. I have 2 tanks of mice currently & the males are much calmer.

I think it took about 2 months for my mice to start breeding, but they are off & running now. I read somewhere mice like to have a secure nesting area - so each tank has a cute igloo - nest box and some paper & cardboard to shred for fun. I like my feeders fat & happy :) they produce better.

Ditch them and start with 2 new colonies...1.2 each. You're bound to get it to work then. Sometimes mice just don't breed but I find it very rare. Out of my 40 cages I've probably seen it in 1 cage every 6 months or so.

Then again.... I do 2.8 and let the fittest survive....usually top dog male takes over and he is almost always fertile.
