Now that's a cranky corn!

Lolo

Surrounded by snakes
I still have my cranky Miami girl, Betty, and have been trying to tame her with regular handling... she's getting a little better, but as you can see below, she still really wants to nom me!! :grin01:

Thought you all might like these pics:

She loves to knock over her water dish... pain to clean up, especially considering how difficult she is to handle.

Lol, great pics! Thanks for sharing. I see you use carefresh bedding for substrate? How does that work for you? I was thinking about switching after a bout with mites. How easy is the carefresh to spot clean?

Thanks! As for the Carefresh, weeellllll... you can see what happens when the water tips over, and it's not a pretty sight! Poop isn't difficult to spot-clean, but anything liquid can make for a soggy tank/tub. Unfortunately I have no choice in the matter, since I'm allergic to wood shavings (aspen, pine, etc). I do like how it doesn't have any natural odors, though, and it seems less messy than aspen.

P.S. I only give Carefresh to the snakes who like burrowing, and everyone else just gets flat newspaper or paper towels - those are MY favorite substrates. ;)

Yea, I think I was allergic to aspen as well. My eyes would get red and itchy every time I would even touch the aspen. Since the mites I have been using paper towels and no red/itchy eyes. Both of my corns like to burrow and go underneath the paper towels so when I'm sure there are no more mites I think I will try Carefresh.

Thanks for the info. :)

I was wondering, how willing are you to be bitten? It might do her some good to get some mouth contact. I think maybe she will see that if she bites and you don't go away, she'll understand it doesn't do any good. Or maybe I give snakes too much faith in logical thinking?

Oh, she's gotten her chance to bite me already! :eatsmiley

She's only tagged me once, actually, and I barely even felt it - so I'm not afraid to get bitten again (especially since I've also been chomped by large ball pythons), but of course human nature causes us to avoid it. Maybe you are giving them too much credit, then again it literally wouldn't hurt to try... perhaps I'll let her gnaw on my finger later, LOL.

You could always wear gloves when handling her at first too. Ya never know, sometimes they can draw blood!

It would be interesting to at least try it.. and post the results. I'm not really sure how well snakes can be "rehabilitated" once they are agro adults.

A little update on Betty... I still have her, and she's as cranky as ever! She tagged me again last night, when I was trying to put her back in the tub (after a cleaning). Check it out:

Hard to see among my freckles, but you can make out a fully wide-open mouth. Right after she did that, I covered my hands with a pair of jeans (I can't find any gloves - I'm such a Californian, LOL) and let her go to town. I even "provoked" her a bit, waving my hand past her face to invoke a strike reaction... after a minute or two, she started to relax and actually let me stroke her head. So I guess there's some hope for her, after all!

I've noticed that nail polish helps with handling snakes. My snakes don't strike at me, but they climb into my hands instead of running away.
