For the past two years now i have been getting low amounts of eggs from my one female. I was wondering if it could be her or if my other pairs could just be producing a larger amount of eggs than average snakes? What is the average snakes you usually get and how many of them survive? There usually is one that dies but i have heard that some people have none that die?

How many did you get in your clutches?
I've had first time females lay smaller clutches but by 'smaller' I mean 13, I usually get about 16 or more. The smaller females lay smaller clutches. It's better to wait until they are a good size than take a chance breeding them too small, but some just don't lay as many as others even as full grown adults. It could also have to do with your male's fertility. Do you brumate them?
It's not unusual to have a few eggs go bad in the incubator, I've had clutches where every single egg hatched and ones where none of them did. I have had bad luck with second clutches this year for some reason, they all looked fine for about 7 weeks and then died in the egg right as hatching time approached :(

Our corn clutch size has ranged from 10 - 28. Hatching rates vary but there are not usually more than 1-2 dead in shell - most corns hatch. We get occasional slugs (infertile eggs) laid in first clutches, more slugs if a female lays a second clutch without being re-bred.

How old is she and had she been bred successfully before you had her?

I have had a couple of older ones mated and their clutch sizes declined from about the age of 7 or 8 years.

I had a snake that used to lay clutches of 20+ eggs, where most were slugs to start with (about a 10% fertility rate). I also have a six year old who has been mated for the last three years and has never laid a single egg, fertile or otherwise. It can just depend on the individual female and the strength of her genetics.
