Number of pinkies?

I am planning on purchasing some corns this year. Anyone know how many pinkies a corn snake will consume on average before it will require the next size up? I know it probably varies from snake to snake, but any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

I would say to be safe buy enough for one year.

Most corns are past pinkies by one year...some are still on them at 8 months old, some longer some less. So if it was me I'd buy for 10 months- one year to be on the safe side. Or you could always just purchase 6 months worth, and hopefully have them on fuzzies by then...mine all were.

or you could be lucky like I am and have a shop nearby that always has them in stock - i get 3 pinkies every ten days for my 10 month old snow corn. we`re almost ready for fuzzies.. almost... last time i looked at a fuzzy they seemed awful big for my snake to get its head round but that was a few months ago now.

am i dumb?

my 11 month old eats adult mice,,,,

in december when it was 6,,,,i used to feed it huge fuzzies,,

and hes not overweight,,i just thought he was,,his size is perfect,,,

when i first got him he was 42 cms(6 month old)

now hes about 70(11 months old)

i always see people post about feeding their 11 month old pinkies
why do you guys still feed pinkies?

is something wrong with my snake,,is it too big

Buy 'em by the bushel basket...

That million mouse discount is attractive. ;)

How often do you plan on feeding your youngin's, twice a week? If that were the case, a loose, off the cuff ballpark figure might be a "100 pack each" would go a long way towards feeling your needs. Pinks are sold "small and large" , by some suppliers, and mixing an order up with some larger pink packs, for down the road, may be a desirable consideration.

I recommend Re-vacuum packing ones stored pinkies, for maximum long term "freshness", as the freezer burn on hairless mice sets in relatively pretty quick compared to "haired" models if not stored properly/ correctly.

A mice vacuum packer (under 20 bucks,U.S.)

It just doesn't take long to cipher out it quickly becomes way too many mice to constantly pay retail, that mousee breeder direct is "the only way to fly."
Theres a reason that pet store owner smiles so much when you drop by with your money...
he knows you got a group of mouse jonesing addicts that need a fix at home..you'll be back for more of the "stuff", "see you next week".
Hey, somebody's got to pay his electric bill, poor guy. The problem is, is that it is you that ends up being the "Poor Guy". ;)

CowBoyWay...

Do you use the Pump N Seal vacuum sealer? Is this product too good to be true? Just curious... If you have used this and recommend it.. then I'm ordering one!

It works great with jars...and pretty good with bags...

The very easy, hassle free method is to use canning (thick) jars with ones cracked open mousee bags tossed into them.
Mice freezer storage vaults, it's a good thing.
It keeps that subtle flavor exchange out of ones Ice Cream.;)

The manufacturers site offers the Food Saver Vacuum Sealer for $14.95 and offer a Full 3-Year warranty, 4-Day shipping, 30 Day Satisfaction Guarantee and a Price Guarantee.
They literally have sold millions of these. :)

One can easily control the vacuum pressure, so don't go "hog wild' as one can really "pump it up", way up, if one wants to, but it's not necessary, So just a couple, few easy pumps and ones good to go. ":)"

Use only with already frozen mice or you'll have a compression problem on ones hands. :)

Wasted. i`m contemplating going up to fuzzies now... Chione is 10 months old , about 60cms or so long and about as thick as my little finger - i`ve been on 3 pinkies every ten days for quite a while...i might go to one fuzzy a week now though!
Anyhow.. as for the size difference, i think its quite normal to have a fairly big difference in size at one year - size seems to vary LOT from one individual to another, plus theres the added differences of housing, heating, feeding routines etc...
I dont think yours is over-big for its age, nor do i think mine is too small.... as long as they are both healthy and mine certainly seems to be :)

Man if it can eat 3 pinkies it HIGH time to move it up.

People are WAY to frantic about moving the snakes up in food size. After the snake can eat two pinkies generally it is more than ready to take a small fuzzy mouse. It has NOTHING to do with head size. It has to do with GIRTH. Man I post this a lot. A corn can take a meal 1.5 to 2 times the WIDEST part of its body. Not the head size. Not that every meal should be 2 times larger. But around the same sizeor a bit bigger.

And like Wasted, my snakes were all WELL past pinkies by a year old, one especially larger guy was eating adult mice at 11 months.

Wow, lots of opinions on this. IMHO, I think multiple piece smaller meals (mice or rats :) ) disgest better than larger, so having an excessive of pinkies, not a bad thing, but having too many fuzzies for small corns, more difficult. I'd say buy them by the 100's also, much cheaper. My 2002 has just geared up to 3 pinkies a week and I'm waiting for him to be able to eat 4 pinkies before moving up. He is, however, much longer than he is wide, that is, he is growing longer faster. . .well, anyway, a large pinkie is wide enough for him (~1 1/2 x his belly) so fuzzies might have to wait a bit longer. So if you are buying 2003 hatchlings and will be feeding an average of 2-3 pinkies a week for a least 10 months, well, you do the math, I don't know how many corns you're planning on.

There is actually a lot of debate as to more smaller items being better than one large one.

I'm going to have to agree with bmm on this one..

If your snake is eating two pinkies, and certainly if it is eating three, you should really consider fuzzy mice. Pinkies really offer little nutritional value for a growing snake.

Looks can be deceiving! Frozen fuzzy mice look much bigger than they actually are. (I call this the freezer effect) But once they are defrosted, they become much more squishy and elastic. Once swallowed, a fuzzy doesn't bulge the snake like you would have imagined. I have seen this repeatedly in my collection. Actually, the bulge of two-three pinkies in a smaller snake is indistinguishable from a fuzzy.

The sure-fire test to see if they are ready is to just try the next larger size. If the snake doesn't regurge, you’re safe. Does this work?? Yes! I moved more than three dozen snakes to fuzzy mice this spring. Results? Not a single one has had a problem keeping a fuzzy down. Several of them were small enough that I just knew I would be seeing the fuzzy again. Boy was I wrong. They are now growing much faster and putting on more weight between feedings.

If our parents had been so protective with our eating habits, we would all still be eating stained peas instead of Bacon Ultimate Cheeseburgers....

WHAT KIND OF A LIFE WOULD THAT BE?!?!?! :D :D

i must say

lol,,the freezer effect,,always bothered me ,,,though i never knew how to describe it,,i must say

nicely said CAV

i must admit, ive only ever seen frozen fuzzies and they looked HUGE!
Might get one for this weekend and see how it goes :p

Wa$ted - It sounds like your yearling is on the large side, but not too huge. :) Frankly, I'm surprised that any corn would still be on pinkies as a yearling, unless it had health problems or was a difficult feeder for the first several months, stunting its growth. My '02 hypo bloodred is now 10 months old, and moved from pinkies to fuzzies a few months ago. And keep in mind that bloodreds are not known for their huge size. :)

I also think that fuzzy mice would be a healthier, more complete meal than pinkies. That's why I moved Bonnie up to fuzzies as soon as I was confident that she could handle it. I tested it by feeding two average size pinks for two consecutive feedings. No problems there, so I moved her up to small fuzzies. She's been eating fuzzies with no problem for awhile now, and is currently eating large fuzzies.

I agree totally.

Pinkies are crap. All my snakes have done 100% better once I got them on fuzzies.

I also have no corn or kingsnake that has taken a year to get on fuzzies.

Calcium /phosphorous balance is better with more mature mice...

Pinkys soft bones have not calcified like a fuzzy's body has had a chance to do.
Thats is why many people will dip a pinky butt in a balanced Calcium product such as "repcal ultra fine with D3", in an attempt to correct the matter.
Standard operating procedure is to not worry about it for most keepers, I would imagine, as it is not a percieved as a problem. imho. :)

;) It is a proud day indeed for a "parent" when your "little one" decides he's too big for "happy meals" anymore, and decides to move on up to the "Big Mac Combo". ;):D

you`ve swung me... one fuzzy coming right up :p

Trust me you will be glad you did.

Once she is taking fuzzies regularly you will definitly notice more growth...
