NY Reptile Expo: Self Restraint

Still learning~~~~~:~

Spencer shares that, yes a baby ball python. The woman took it out of a pillow case from under the table, there was a clutch she had, having only one on display. He said it was definitely Regal Reptiles. He believes that the one with the hog nose hatchlings was Eggtooth Nurseries, but that's not a positive ID.

He loves his corns but wants just one that is different than what his mom has, mostly an emerald boa? I think. You know the one that looks like the snake in the Jungle Book. What do moms know?(it's got to be hard to have the same interest as your mother when your 13)

Anyhow Thank the gods and goddess for a cautious kiddo who wants to research and review before he purchases and makes a committment. Sam ~~~~~~:~

no, i really don't have any of these imaginary snakes but i can probably find a pet store or unscrupulous vendor who does... ---jim

Hey Jim I think you've got that pet store sales pitch down. (Not all pet shops are bad of course...just a lot of them...)

THis is kind of unrelated but I got my stripe from Eggtooth Nurseries! The guy was really nice and he was really helpful when I asked him stuff like does it eat frozen mice, how old is he, etc. I also asked him a bunch of questions I already knew the answers to just to make sure he really knew about corns and he didn't get annoyed by that or anything.
Hm..this was wayyyy back in December and so my short-term memory span is failing me, but I do remember that he had glasses. I think he was like...40's? Don't remember for sure and I'm terrible at guessing ages. And I think he had white hair. Again, my memory is completely unreliable when you ask me to remember past yesterday.

My friend has a ball python and it is really really really nice. I mean like..nice personality. He wasn't surprised at all when I picked him up and he didn't seem to mind that I was a stranger. I might want to get one in the future. :) Maybe they will be cheaper by then too.

Pet Store stuff ~~~~~~~:~

Iris, The only real concern we had was not with Eggtooth, we didn't even talk with them. It was a completely different booth and there were a few things that made us uneasy, the breading pair of corns on display was one. We weren't out shopping for snakes just supplies, so we weren't asking a lot of questions. It was our first show and almost overwhelming! BUT lots of fun and we can't wait for the next one. Sam ~~~~~~:~

Oh, no, I was just talking about Eggtooth because it was mentioned and I'm just so happy with my snake that I thought I should maybe praise them a little..
I know, you were talking about a different booth but I thought I'd just contribute to the thread..:)
Isn't the show great?? I went to the December one to get my baby and it was great! Really crowded. I was planning to go to this one too but I couldn't make it. Maybe the July show to see all the new hatchlings. Can't wait. :D

I am with you ~~~~~~:~

Yes! We plan on going to the July show. I would imagine that there will be tons of hatchlings. Spencer is feeling that we are at our max, and I need to respect that.....but you know, just one more little tiny baby...well, we'll see. At the very least their prices for fuzzies and pinkies was great and worth the trip. Quality food is another problem with comercial pet stores here.
How many snakes do you have? I was happy to hear that your experience with the ball python was so positive, just in case that's what Spencer decides to go with, thanks for sharing. Sam ~~~~~:~

Oh I only have one at the moment. My mom, unlike you, is NOT a fan of any reptiles, ESPECIALLY snakes but I proved that I could be responsible about it and she finally agreed. I don't think she can be convinced that snakes aren't slimy evil creatures but I don't really mind as long as I get to keep him. :)
I might get an amel this June because my Bio teacher's snake laid eggs and judging from how much they've grown, I think they are fertile. Two will probably be my limit though because when I go to college (in 2005) I will have to bring my snake(s) with me and I'm not even sure if the college I will choose will allow snakes. Plus I pay for everything related to my snake by myself so I have to either work or save up my allowance for and and all supplies.
When I'm older I plan to get some more of course. I am addicted to them, it's just that I know that I won't be able to take care of all of them if I just buy whatever I want. I guess you could call it being responsible. :) I love them too much to let them risk being mistreated.
I do love the show despite only having been to one. The prices are great, yes and you get to see some pretty neat snakes even if they're not corns. I also like the little baby bearded dragons. SO ADORABLE! Another animal I will get when I am older. I can't wait to grow up. (in 30 years I will probably be complaining how I grew up too fast but..oh well)

One COOL kid ~~~~~~:~

Iris, you remind me of Spencer. Very responsible and always thinking of what is best for his snakes. I had two boas when I was in college. I lived off campus so it was ok. I had to move around a lot so I ended up having to sell them. One got out once and was gone for about three weeks. I thought I would never see her again and then one evening I heard a shreek form my roommates bedroom. My baby was found! It will be fun to hear about your new snake. One of Spencer's (Cornelius) is an Amel. GOOD LUCK. Sam ~~~~~:~

sam,
spencer and iris both seem to have been blessed with very good parents and i agree with you. there are quite a few people whose posts i always enjoy and iris' posts are always on that list. (iris, sometimes i think you're more mature than i am, and i'm 31 :)) have a good night all, jim

Kids and Snakes ~~~~:~

Jim
A nice thought to share. I'm lucky enough to work with kiddos and it's pretty exciting for me when I'm working with someone who is into snakes. I find that if people are interested in a subject they seem to be able to maintain a higher level of maturity as well as an excitment that is contagious. When people listen to you share about your snakes I imagine that they would be impressed by your commitment.
I agree with you, Iris sounds like a mature young person and it's always refreshing to read her thoughts and insights into the wonderful world of corn snakes. Sam~~~~~~~:~

Aw, thanks Jim and Sam for all the compliments!
I've been kinda sick lately and swamped with hw AND I have to practice piano like crazy because I have an important thing this weekend so I didn't get to read all the posts (like I usually do) until today.
Xavier's in his blue eyed stage so I have to go raise the humidity. I hope this skin comes off all in one piece...the 2 previous ones didn't...
Well anyway, thanks again for all the nice things you guys said! I gotta go back to practicing piano now...bye!
