What if a child with 20 snakes in their room at home gets a good opportunity to attend a college that is outside of their immediate area? What if a school offers them an atheltic scholarship? What if they would REALLY like to attend a study-abroad program as a junior in college? Who will take care of their pets then?

The teenage and college years are far too tumultuous for any child to be the sole caregiver for an animal. If the animal isn't the parents animal, for whom they are responsible and enjoy caring for enough that when the teen is too busy or bored to care for it, they will, then there's no reason for the home to have that pet.

This is the reason why I have always refused sales and adoptions to teenagers, including the teenager in question.

I am 19, have 32 snakes, live in a one bedroom apartment, and I am in college and have a part time job...all of my pets get regular proper care. I've even managed a trip to the Florida Everglades.

As I said in that post I was excited and it was the first thing that came to me. Just because I want one does not mean I am getting one. So I don't in any way see how it was a firvolous post just a post (all tho I did not say it) stating that I now like pythons and would one day love to own one.
 
i got my normal ball python for 20 bucks from an expo :) hes honestly my favorite he has a great personality, isnt a picky eater at all (3 months old and started on live but i converted him to frozen/thawed), and is probably one of the easiest to take care of compared to other exotic snakes. i highly recommend them as well as corns

If you have bred an animal, you are responsible for it in my opinion. When a person on this forum said they were freezing perfectly healthy baby corns because the economy had tanked and they couldn't get "what the snake is worth" for each baby, many, many people were up in arms....

In my opinion, selling to a teenager or the average college age student is no different than chucking that snake in a freezer. In fact, freezing them would be preferable to what many snakes sold to kids have to endure before finally passing away.

You would not believe the stories I hear as a teacher who keeps snakes in their classroom about students reptile and small mammal "disposable" pets. Students have had their parents flush frogs down the toilet... tossed hamsters out into fields...

All because the parents didn't want to deal with the responsibility after the kid was no longer interested.

I'm really happy for you. The sad fact is that most people your age are barely capable of taking care of themselves, let alone an animal with real needs.

My opinion is unpopular amongst people who want to believe that their responsibility as a breeder ends with a sale. I know that, but it doesn't change my thoughts on the matter.
 
Lauren, are you saying Jasmine is better off in a freezer? Jasmine the snake that gets the good life? Jasmine the snake that chilling right next to me right now? That snake? I don't think so.

Don't you dare throw that up in my face, you small little man. How dare you go to that. What makes you so desperate that you have to prove a point by going back to something that can happen to anyone. It happens to the people who keep one snake and the people that keep 600 snakes. You are a real piece of work.
 
Lauren, though you have decent points, not all 25 years and younger people are stupid and irresponsible. Even with adults, choices must be made on individual basis, and you must realize that even if you sell an animal to a 50 year old professional herper, they may resell it to a 13 year old. You can save everything.

A lot of people use that kind of thing. You don't know anything, you think you do, you really wish you knew but its sad that you continue to think its cool to argue with a 17 year old. You continue to strike me while I'm down. Oh Dave but the truth is, you are sitting in your house, while you family moves on with their life, but you are arguing with a child.
 
Umm... I use a space heater... What is wrong with that? It has a built in temp gauge and shuts off at a certain temperature. Could that part short out and cause too much heat... yes, but I do not have heat in my house right now and I do not want my snakes getting sick because they are too cold.

If Dave, knew anything about the hobby he would know a large majority of breeders just heat the whole room with a space heater.
 
Well, I am 24. But I have been in situations that most people older than me would not want to be, and no they were not legal situations.

OK you are excited young or old we all get excited about what we think we want. I think most people on here are advising not to move to soon get to extended until you are sure of your home life.
While we all enjoy others wants, needs, joys and sorrows, maybe just a 'thanks for the advice' works.

David you are a 17 yo arguing with an adult. An adult who goes out of thier way to help new people, making link lists to advice... I'm sorry for your loss but if I remember it's been a bit of a move to Mom's--move to Dad's--life is up in the air--sell snakes---buy snakes. This is a cyber world only those who have met others face-to-face can say what the actual deal is and even then no one can be sure. David you could be a 35 yo whiner looking for a shoulder to cry on and I could be Lady Gaga. As far as Lenny wishing he knew anything about you, well gee except for this slice of life right now???

Pfft. I have no issue with this guy till he trows something like that in my face. I assure you I am not 35, I have met several members on the forum.
