Omg my snake escaped

Rule 1: Don't Panic. This happens to everyone at some point in snake-keeping. It usually turns out just fine.

Rule 2: See rule 1

Rule 3: Make absolutely certain she is not still in the cage. I can not tell you how many times I have torn my house completely apart looking for a snake that never actually escaped.

Rule 4: Snakes are lazy. Check areas immediately in the vicinity of the cage, especially those places that you assume "she couldn't possibly be"

Rule 5: If you don't find her anywhere nearby, leave the cage open. She may go back in on her own. There are a couple of methods for building snake traps, if you want to go that route. For the most part, though, most snakes that are not found almost immediately, are found accidentally. Be patient, she'll probably come find you in a few days after she's done exploring. It may also help if you do night searches with a flashlight.

I checked her cage removed her hammock she wasn't in there , removed her rock and water dish she wasn't there took all the substrate out and no snake ......... I noticed this afternoon that one of my heat vent covers was lifted and never thought anything of it ( thought kids stepped on it ) ..... I have flipped over one couch searched thoroughly , looked in the box beside her cage , cut open the bottom of my other couch found money n socks no snake ... I looked under her cage , looked under the fridge n stove and move the washer n dryer and no snake...... Peered under my tv stand and couldn't see her , checked closets nothin ..... Im losin my .... I have a thawed fuzzy in that vent i notice open and one in my kitchen .... Im terrified she is in the heating system......... Ive called pest control to see if they could come and make sure she wasn't there but I'm broke and don't get money till the 20

Honestly, I think it's time for Rule: 5. Nobody likes to sit back and do nothing, but I've lost dozens of snakes in my house, and the vast majority of them were found completely by accident a few days after escape. Tearing the place apart only adds to the stress. The one thing that I've found that is most helpful is getting up and walking around the house a couple of times per night with a flashlight. Other than that, you'll probably just stumble on to her in a couple of days while you're going about your day.

Yea i placed a mouse in her cage and one is in the kitchen , me and the kids are off to the park so i stop trashing my house and crying .... I plan on doing a night time reacon n not sleeping , waiting for pest control to call back n see if i can get it invoiced to the 20 just to ease my mind that she isn't in the heating system

Try not to worry. I'm sure it will all be fine. These guys are more capable of taking care of themselves than we think. She will, in all likelihood, turn up in a couple of days. Best of luck.

You can also put some lines of baking powder along the baseboards in a few spots so you can see if she's crawling around when you're not looking. I think a snake could find its way out of the heating system, and at least it's not furnace season! Remember an adult snake can go months without eating and come through it fine.

Good luck!!

My heating vents in the upstairs go straight down .... Are u sure she will be able to get out .... I have the vents covered cause if she isn't in them i don't want her to go down them .... I have her cage open and a fuzzy on a plate in her cage...... Im beside myself with guilt n worry

The lowest part of your system will be the furnace. You should easily be able to take out the air filter and peek inside with a flashlight. If you're not running central air conditioning, you could leave the filter out and put more baking powder around to see if she comes out and leaves a trail.

One of my cats got into the furnace plenum after falling 2 stories... she's lucky I heard her meowing... I think that used up two lives!

My snake detests LED flashlights. She recoils from that bright light. I don't know if this is common or unusual, but I thought I should mention it just in case this helps you find your escapee faster! I'm so sorry you're going through this, but am wishing you the best of luck. I hope you find her safe and sound soon with a story to tell. :)

Breathe. You can do this!

*update* okay so last night i placed sugar down ... In front of all door ways , in front of both sets of stairs , in front n around couches n her cage , in front of the washer , dryer , dishwasher , fridge , stove , front closet ..... I have narrowed down the area she is in to the kitchen area fridge , stove n dishwasher , front closet and into the laundry room however there was no disturbance of the sugar in front of the washer n dryer .... No disturbance of the sugar in front of the basement stairs or anything down stairs !!!!!!! N. Praise all things fuzzy she isn't in my vents .... I will be covering the vents with plastic bags and staying up tonight and going to use my heat lamp and a thawed fuzzy in the kitchen area .......

Congrats on finding her! I lost mine a couple months back when I fell asleep with him on the couch. Like you, I tore my house apart looking for him to no avail. Two nights later when I had just about given up hope, I was laying on the couch and heard him plop from the couch onto the floor. I don't know who was shocked more when I found him, me or him. I must say I've never seen him so happy to head back into his tank as that night.
