On the topic of substrate....

A pic of a keeper is not a very good reason, only there care info and quility of there animals is what counts!

Yes i do know you from some uk forums!

Back to Substrate and Bathing.....

Thanks all for the input on substrate cleaning...seem to be some varied point of view regarding BOTH topics depending who you talk to...as with many things in life. I think we must all keep in mind that what works for one owner and/or snake may not for another.

I am less worried about the sanitary conditions of my viv now, though. I have had Ren since June. Spot clean poo'd areas and replace with clean. I occasional sift through the back (especially UNDER the water dish where dampness seems to settle at the bottom) and look for anything that doesn't belong there (poo) while "mixing" the bark around a bit to prevent any one area from getting to damp. I worry about fungus and mildew and the likes.

As far as bathing...I tried it once and will probably not attempt to do so anytime soon. I did it in a shallow pan of water as I was waiting (somewhat impatiently) for snake to defecate and thought it would help. Snake totally freaked...did not want to be in there at ALL! She sticks to taking her baths on her own in her water bowl which is fine by me! LOL! (And another thanks to those who informed me on how often to wash it...I keep it REALLY clean now!)

Anyway, I'm hoping what I'm doing sounds like it's ok. I try to take ALL advice/input into consideration and blend it in with my snakes personal needs, likes and dislikes.

Thanks again all!

My only beef would be topic hijackers, where the topic went on substrate to snake spas?

I am glad Bekah you got some information on this thread about substrate.

*looks about sheepishly*

hmm, tis was me, i think. sorry
bekah i too am glad you got some use out of it. :)

I spot clean my tanks at least every other day. I completely disinfect them once a month. I have found that my snakes are more stressed by bathing them than by cleaning their enclosures. I agree with CAV on this subject :)

hightower,

Your snake usually baths when it is close to shedding, if you have a black light/heatlight and the "viv" is around 85 degrees toward dusk you may find your pet bathing.
