on track size wise?

I was just looking at some old threads and am now thinking that my snow is WAY behind in size. I got him from a pet store 5 months ago (the pet store received the snake on Aug. 22 2006) and he is only 13 inches long and still on one pinky every 5 days. So far he has only skipped one feeding and has grown about an inch a month, is this normal? He was starving when I got him as the stupid pet store only fed him once a month. I was also wondering how old corn snakes are when pet stores receive them.

Will he take two pinkies if you offer them?

I've got a little girl in the same sort of situation - she's too small to comfortably take a fluff, but one pinky isn't doing it. I've offered her two this week and she seems fine with that :)

Growing about an inch a month is about normal. I think he is doing ok. He may be small for his age, but he'll catch up eventually.

Just for the record, two pinkies often makes a bigger meal than one fuzzy. If he can take two pinkies, I'd try to get him on to fuzzies as soon as you can. They have more calcium and nutrition, so your snake will grow faster.

I'll try offering him two this week and see what he does. I am back home from school right now and the local pet stores have fuzzies but they are all huge, once I get back to Madison I will try to get some smaller fuzzies and try feeding those to him.

Just remember the rule

Just remember the rule of thumb on those fuzzies. You don't want to push your snake too early when its size is not proportionate to the food. The fuzzy must not be more than 1 and 1/2 times larger than the thickest part of your snakes body. The last thing you want is a regurge cause then you have to wait 10-12 days before feeding again and that just back tracks you. Mine is about 7 months old and it now takes two fuzzies at one feeding no prob. He had trouble killing them at first cause hes a wuss. But he found out quick he had to otherwise he wasnt getting it down (and for those of the pros reading this, yes I supervise all feedings and never leave my snake alone with a live meal in the cage). But yea you have to take into consideration size as well. If he is downing two pinks, if you stick to that for like 2-3 weeks, he should be ready in 3-4 feedings for a small fuzzy. Just make sure when you ask the person at the store that you ask for one on the smaller size that has a little bit of hair. Good luck, let us know how the next couple of feedings go. Later.

Ps Becky does have an excellent point as far as nutrition is concerned. Fuzzies are much more nutritional than pinks, so that helps as far as having a healthier snake.

well i just tried feeding him two smaller pinks but he only took one. He sniffed at the other one a couple of times but then just turned and gave me a look like, "What do you think I'm fat?!" I think I might start feeding him once every 4 days instead of 5 for the next month or so and see what happens.

With pinkies I would,and did feed every 4th day.The lump was gone inside 36 hours,so I bumped him to 2 per feeding.That worked fine for a while.Same thing,though,,within 36 hours,no lump.Now hes on to fuzzys.So far,so good.

Try not to worry. If you continue feeding him on a good schedule, he will eventually catch up. My snow, when I first got her, was on the small side as she'd only been fed every 10-14 days. It took a while, but now she is my biggest corn at 45" at 2 1/2 years old.

Thanks for the reassurance, I am just getting too far ahead of myself as I really want a full grown snake. I was just at the pet store where I bought Mason and they had some corn snakes there, one of which I am certain will die in the next couple of days. It was only about 6 inches long and couldn't have weighed more than 1.5 grams, it was thinner than a pencil at its widest point! And it was five months old also!! Now I am glad that I got Mason out of there, but I am not glad that I supported the store by giving them my money....
