online f/t pinkies??

ok, i'm getting frustrated with getting frozen or live pinkies here in town. there isnt a local breeder here. so all the pet stores that carry reptiles are ordering feeders and they all get shipped on the same day (Thursday). my problem is that they're expensive ($1 per fuzzy/pinkie) and usually when i call to see if they have any, they're already sold out. in the past, i've gotten frozen feeders from Petco whenever i cant get feeders from the other local pet stores. but Petco is expensive too and they've been sold out too.

so i'm thinking of ordering frozen feeders online. i've read the other threads on this and i'm looking at a few places to order from...the mouse factory or gourmet rodent, maybe. but i have a problem...i work a lot. i dont want to place an order and find a thawed out box of mice on my front porch. and i dont want my gf to find a box of dead mice on our porch. she'd kill me.

how good are these online companies as far as shipping? can i pick a day and approximate time when i can get the box shipped? or is fedex like the cable company.."they'll be here between 8-5pm"?

Depending on where you live???, you might be able to find frozen rodents at a local reptile show. I know here in Cleveland, RodentPro has a booth at the monthly show. You pay NO shipping costs and they sell them in smaller quantities than offered on the website. Sunday, I got 50 rat fuzzies for $20.00.

Hopefully this helps you, if not, you'll have to wait for someone who can answer your shipping questions.

For the most part, they cannot control the time that your package is delivered. You should always be in the habit of having your package delivered somewhere that it can be signed for or picked up immediately. This saves you the issues of theft or defrosting.

After ordering from several companies in the past (including the one before last which I will NEVER do business with again), but I've found that The Mouse Factory is very good with customer service, quality, and shipping. And they receive our recommendation.

Of course, ordering online, you are going to pay rather extensively for shipping. A bit of advice is to plan ahead, and purchase a few month's worth in advance. To make the shipping fees worthwhile. Also, try to split the shipping with another person local to you, perhaps 2 or 3 ways.

Your best result would be from searching through this and any other forums that you frequent for the topic. Take into consideration other's experiences with a vendor, make a determination, and make an order to justify (or not) your purchase decision. If you are happy about it, you will find that it is FAR more economical to purchase online in bulk, than it ever will be to get (*shudder*) pet store feeders/animals.

cool thanks! i'll ask around at work to see if i can have it shipped there. and i do plan on buying at least 50 pinkies. both of my snakes are fairly young and will be on pinkies for awhile. plus my two turtles eat pinkies as treats now and then.

At this time of the year no matter where you live, a box of rodents will not thaw out if left outside. When I got my order there was still a very large block of dry ice still left. I have no doubt that it would have been just fine if it had sat outside for a few hours.

It seems like most use 2nd day air, and that's not gonna be delivered at 10am. I think mine showed up around 3ish or so.

would definately help to know where you are at...
seems there are many rodent farms out there that offer f/t mice, rats, and more.

I personally know the Seattle area has a couple, and Portland has IceColdMice

I have always used Big Cheese because they are in Dallas and I am in Texas. But, remember to order more than 50 or the shipping will kill you. Order pinks and fuzzes and some hoppers they will keep in the freezer. And the over all cost will go down.

One of the rodent places might let you get your package delivered to the fed ex office near you, and then you just pick it up after work.

I have a question though. :) How big is a pack of 100 pinkies from rodentpro, or its equivalent from somewhere else? My roomate doesn't want to see a big pack of mice in there.
Thanks!
Kimberly

Plan ahead. For example.

2 pinks/wk x 16 weeks = 32 pinks (sold in a bag of 50) = 1 bag

Do you realize that you're going to spend at least $30-$40 in shipping for one bag of pinkies?
That hardly seems economical. So, again, plan ahead. Be prepared to move to another size of feeder, and stock up for that size as well. Make the most of your $30-$40 shipping charge, which is most likely what your standard size shipping box is going to cost. Quite often, people find themselves paying anywhere from $60 - $120+ in shipping fees; depending on how much they're ordering.

Plan. Ahead.

exactly why I stay local. No shipping charges...

not sure of any f/t distributors in FL, but hopefully someone else will chime in... i'd be there are a TON

Hi Again!
I was looking around and LLL reptile has a really good deal, but for us with fewer snakes, Serpent pets has a grow-up pack reasonably priced (less then Petsmart and local store here) that includes shipping. I might try that.

The Gourmet Rodent near Gainesville is flexible with quantities, and I've read that they don't charge much for shipping within Florida. UPS Ground is usually 'next day' here. Depending on what you want, it may be more economical to order from them (yes they are more expensive for some sizes.) They definitely have nice-looking, clean mice. In my experience, pinkies are outgrown fairly quickly (consider getting mostly fuzzies and maybe some hoppers, unless you want to have little bonsai-snakes.)

ok i'm a moron...i thought i had put where i was at in my profile. i'm in tallahassee FL.

Join the Tallahassee club.

I wish you had posted this earlier. I got a sizeable rodent pro order in about 2 months ago....would have been easy to toss in an extra bag of pinkies or so.

Yeah the tallahassee club kinda sucks though for feeders!!! you'd think with all the pet stores in town, it would be easy and cheap to get feeders...i'm definitely going to check out big cheese.

hey have you ever heard of a pet store in Tallahassee called "House of Reptiles"? it's in the phone book, but i dont think it exists. the address is right down the street from my house, so i drove by there, and it's not there. maybe went out of business?

On Parkway? That place is long gone. I sent you a PM about an online shipment.

thought so....
yeah i got the pm thanks! but i couldnt reply back...it said your box is full. but i'll place an order with them. a bag of fuzzies and a bag of pinkies. that should last awhile! my reptiles will be happy. and i wont have to call all around town every month looking for feeders.

Well I'll be darned. Thanks for pointing that out, I didn't notice that it was full. I guess that explains why I didn't get any replies to any PM's I've sent lately, lol.

That's definitely the way to go. At least that way you're set for a few months and you don't have to spend a fortune at the store. Btw, Northwest Florida Herps on Tharpe ALWAYS has feeders in one Thursday, they're just ridiculously expensive.
