Open Snake Surgery

We will be doing surgery to remove some very large eggs from my binded female tomorrow. I worry about having her cut into, but know its necessary for her at this point. We will try aspiration and manipulation first, but if that doesnt work easily they will do surgery and remove them.

The vet is going to actually video her procedure of going through aspiration and trying manual manipulation first, then the actual surgery as well. She is doing this video at my request and will give me a copy of it , I will then make it digital video.

I think this could be a great learning tool to have around. I will make it available to those of you who want it in some way once I have it. So many vets have little experience with snakes simply because there has not been much demand for them to work with them. So any way we can get more experience and education in the vetrinary comunnity as well, I think is very important. My vet has experience, but will be the first to tell you that its not "alot" because the opportunity for her to work with reptiles is not near often enough. This will be her first full OPEN surgery to remove the eggs. However I totally trust her.

I will let you know how the surgery goes tomorrow .

awww, good luck to both you and your girl, hope everything goes ok, it would be great to see the video aswell, somepne on here should jknow how to put them on!!

good luck!!!

Hope it all goes well, fantastic vet you've got there by the sound of things, and kudos to you to think of helping others with the video when you must be so worried about your snake.

Thanks , Yes I am very happy with my vet. She is honest about her knowledge and experience and not hesitant to let me know when she feels she needs to research things before acting. Not to mention I always get a personal call from her the day after to check on things. I worry about how things will go tomorrow a bit, but I would worry much more if I did nothing.

Man, has to be stressful, for her and you. Good luck with the operation, I hope it goes well :)

Today is the day..

Well my girl still had not pushed those eggs down any further, so this morning I dropped her off with the vet for the procedures to remove them. I REALLy hope they can do at least the one near the vent with aspiration techniques and no cutting. the other two are higher up and not budging so I think they are caught on something and will need to be cut out. They will start surgery soon...So I am on pins and needles here at work waiting to hear from them. :puke01:

I am really anxious about this, I can't imagine how you feel. Best of luck with this, I hope it all goes smoothly :)

The results

The vet just called. Sad thing is my cell phone never even rang so she went to my voicemail.

Well anyway... She said they were unable to manipulate the eggs out manually so they did two incisions and removed all 3 eggs. One incisions was made within an inch of the cloaca for the really big egg and the other incision is about 4 inches up from there. The vet said the anestecia went fine and that the snake did well through the whole thing. They want to keep it over night and I will pick it up tomorrow.

I just went and picked her up. I and they feel she will get watched more closely if I have her at home. The vet doesn't feel there is any internal damage that would keep her from breeding successfully in the future. I will not breed her next year though. these are the upper eggs they removed from her. They are full size and good shaped but they are a bit slick instead of dry. I do not think they are good eggs, but have given them a spot in the incubator to see how they develop.

Can we say Cuss words on here...because I would sure like to!

This sweet animal of mine that had surgery last year for being eggbound was not bred this year because of the risks involved with possible scar tissue or other internal issues from that incident.... BUT, she apparently held sperm and did develop eggs and I mean FULLY develop eggs. There was concern that she could not carry them this year due to having surgery last year thus I did not breed her but I guess she wanted to try again.

Well here we go again. She laid 3 last night and has retained what appears to be two more....I am sooo frustrated with this situation.

Sigh...I am soo not happy about this :(
