Otis

I'm getting really worried about my RO Otis! He is 6 months old and is still only 12g!! He eats a pinky every 5 days but tonight he refused to eat for the first time! I know it's not unusual but I'm worried about his weight for this age I mean shouldn't he weigh quite a bit more than that at 6 months!?!

Nicole

If he's eating a pinky every five days and hasn't gained I believe it's vet time.

Best wishes!

He's gained 5g since I got him but that's it! What is a normal weight for a 6 month corn roughly? I don't know of any vets in my area that do snakes but I will go wherever I need to go to help him!!

I'm glad to hear he's gained a little. As you know, there's no right answer to the how fast they should grow question. I don't have tons of experience with a bunch of different corn snakes either. I'm mostly going on what I've read. That said, the refusal coupled with the slow gain is a red flag that would have me consulting a vet at this point. As a layperson, I'm going to err on the side of caution.

if he's gained 5 grams since you got him, that might be about right. He's only eating pinkies and he's only eating every 5 days. He was very small at the start.

Does he seem healthy otherwise? ie - Is he drinking water? Is he active and alert? Does he poop 2 or 3 days after eating?

It certainly won't hurt to visit the vet, but he may be perfectly fine.

Some people actually feed hatchlings on a 4 day schedule until they reach about 20 grams. I would suggest that myself. Then at 20 grams go back to 5 days, and then go to 6 days at about 35 grams.

He could be getting ready to shed. Some snakes will refuse meals leading up to and during shed.

But by all means, take him to the vet if you're concerned.

He is about due for a shed and yes he does seem very healthy otherwise and this is the first time he had ever refused!! He was super small when I got him! He has been spending a lot of time in his humid hide too so maybe I'll give it a couple days and see if he sheds. In the meantime I will search out a vet that deals with snakes just in case!!

There's a chance that Otis has a internal parasitic load but he is most likely a slooooow grower. I've learned over the years that some snakes just grow at their own pace. I have siblings right now that you would think that they were hatched years apart and there is no speeding up the process! They grow at their own speed and that's it. When Otis gets a little bigger then he will probably start growing at a faster pace.
