Out of the Ordinary Hides

I was just wondering what type of out-of-the-ordinary hides other folks have used. I have fun decorating my snake's vivs, and besides the usual favorites (for the snakes) i.e., toilet paper rolls, I was curious what other folks have used that are unique.

I like the skulls. My amel has a wicker basket that he loves. It has a lid I can easily remove, and holes on two opposing sides so he can slither in and out very easily. This past weekend, I saw some unpainted bird houses for only $5 at Michael's, so I bought one for my snow. It's in the shape of a little church with a steeple and even has a front door that opens. She seemed to like it quite a bit already. I'll try to post pics soon to give an idea.

I have used all kinds of weird stuff. I've used: Wooden Kleenex box cover, PVC pipe, wicker bird house, giant plastic strawberry, upside down butter tubs, and a various other weird things. Right now I've got mostly common stuff in there. A plastic tree, coconut hide, and a half log, all surrounded by fake ferns. Bobo is outgrowing his strawberry, so will probably be getting him a bigger hide soon. Wonder what it will be :crazy02:

Very cool. My garter has outgrown his hide, maybe I'll try and get creative.

For Dante' I have the hide that he came with, which is an Exo-Terra thing, and he spends all of his time there, so I guess it's good. Majik's got a wierd one though. She's got a cream cheese container with a hole cut in the side. She uses it mostly after she eats, and all the rest of the time, she's under her waterbowl. What a cutie!

My Favorites

I get these at the grocery store, they are cheap! The biggest one (which hides a 4' emoryi) is less than $2. Not very aesthetic, but when the snake lives in a sterilte tub............. :grin01:

I've been playing around with Sculpey clay, making hides and water bowls. I'll post some pics when I get a chance.

Is sculpey safe for stuff like that? I don't know if I would feel safe putting it around my snakes. My brother got a whole ton of it for Christmas, and if you think it's safe, or better yet, KNOW it's safe, then I might hafta make some stuff! How neato would that be! Dante still needs a proper water bowl...

Since most of my snakes are regrettably in plastic tubs, the hides aren't as nice as I'd like for them to be. If you don't mind tackiness, then these work great. Cheap and easily replaceable if they get soiled.

I utilize:

- Kleenex boxes
- Trash bag boxes - Picture
- Optical mouse box
- Clemtine boxes
- Wolverine boot box (has nice holes in the box) - Picture
- Broken flower pots - Picture
- Styrofoam meat tray
- Styrofoam mushroom tray
- Plastic juice cans (Welch's)
- Plastic Akro bins (stackable storage bins) - Picture
- Toilet paper and paper towel rolls
- Light Hood Box - Picture


In my vivs in the computer room though, they're decorated with real sticks, rocks, and hides that look like rock caves.

right now Blaze has this as one of his hides..but as you can see he's outgrowing it. i'll probably move it into one of my other smaller snake's vivs. i've used old aquarium decorations (castles, ships, pirate skulls) from my fish tanks (after i clean them of course!) i'm thinking about getting him a plastic jaguar skull i saw at my local fish store. it's supposed to be used for an aquarium but would be perfect for Blaze.

At the moment I have one peice of Cork bark lying across both warm and cool areas so Travis can feel comfortable wherever, Those Exo-Terro reptile dens with the 'Through-the-glass' thing going on look really cool! Does anyone have them? and are they alright for snakes or better suited for lizards?

I have one of those, and my snake seems to love it. He hardly ever comes out of there. The only bad thing about it that I have been concerned about is it stays quite a bit cooler than the rest of the viv, it is only about 68F. I just switched him over to fuzzies and it is taking him about 4 days to digest. Does anybody think I should worry about that and maybe get rid of the Den?

I'll try to post pics of him chillin in the den when I get home from work today.

It's a shame that it gets too cool, They designed it to be insulated to keep it cooler, but that feature must work a bit TOO well lol. Is that on the cool side or warm?

Oo it'll be cool to see pics of it being used rather than on the Exo-Terra site lol.

It's actually right in the middle and I was thinking about putting it all the way over on the warm side to see what happens.

Ikea has these water dishes about 4'' across and 2'' deep. theu also have a grove to pick them up witch works for some smaller snakes. Thay also have one that is like 8'' across and 3'' deep and the grove is big enough for a adult corn. the smaller ones were at the normal price for them of $0.25 and the larger ones are either $0.50 or $o.75

Dog and cat food bowls hehe... heres a pic =) Luckily I've got a little bro that is talented with the band saw LOL... he cut the doors in them and sanded every rough spot on the entire bowl =)

I've been using the black plastic trays that Stouffers macaroni and cheese and lasagna come in. I just cut a snake size hole in them. As they grow, I guess I'll have to get some of those 'family size' portions. They're easy to wash in the top rack of the dishwasher, and they're free!
