Outside of the cage

When is enough enough when handling corns? How much time can they spent outside of the cage? I think it would be so cool when I get a corn that it would hang out on my art desk while I draw. I'd make sure the snake wouldn't wander too far but does being out of their cage for long periods of time stress them out?

I don't know about the snake, I'm sure it depends on the individual. But it might be stressful for you as you'd chasing the snake around as it wanders into hard to get places like behind the drawers of your desk. And when you're drawing, you might find that constantly keeping an eye on the snake will interfere with your concentration.

Well it would be a nice idea, but the only time mine is still when it is out is when it's going to poop. Somehow I don't think you would like that on your work.:D

Hello there,

i'm Nick, I read your quetion. As I keep cornsnakes for 'bout a year now, i never keep my corns out the cage for longer than 5 minutes at the time. So maybe this is the anwer to your question.

Greeting,
Nick

I keep mine out for as long as an hour, draped around my neck where they can either watch the world or hide inside of my collar. They "hang around" that way while I am at the computer or doing stuff around the house. They also seem to really like climbing all over our wooden spindle backed rocking chair, which is the closest thing to a climbing tree that we have in the house. I also take them outside for periods of time to get some real sunlight ~ not strong light in the middle of the day, usually in the early evening when it is still warm. They seem to be OK with this, not stressed or anything.

For just arrived snakes and hatchlings, well I would say after they have settled down, the max of 5 min at the begining and then the length of time could increase slowly.... Right now one of the milk snake phase I got from Rich is very aggressive, bites everytime I try to pick it up. At first it's tail rattled for the whole 5 mins when I was holding it. Now it's tail rattles for the 1st 30 secs and then it just tries to escape for the next 4 min 30 secs.... but still it would try to bite me when I take it out from it's tub... Until I calm it so that it doesn't rattle or bite me when I pick it up and hold it for 5 mins, then I will increase the length of time.

Hope this helped.....

Good Luck and Happy Herping!
