Paper Towel/Newspaper As Substrate Questions

Good morning, All!

Just a few questions to those folks that use either paper towel or newsprint as substrate:

1) Can you use a paper shredder to disassemble the paper towels/newsprint?
2) If so, do you recommend the shredders that cut material into strips, or that cross cuts into smaller pieces?

Thanks for your time, and have an excellent day!

Hi

Thats a good question, can i use shredded paper from work as it would be much cheaper as we go through a bin bag every week, also it is strips shred?

Thanks jo

I would tend to think that shredded paper would be alright. The cross-shred stuff would lay down better compaired to the strips sticking up, however the cross-shred stuff has a lot of static cling. (it gets all over the office everytime we change the bag in the shredder) I would think it would also be more likely for it to be injested, so if you're going to give shreddings a try, I'd go with the strips, and be sure to check the temperature at the glass as with shreds it'll be just as easy if not easier for the snake to reach the glass. If you do try it, let us know how it turns out.

Shredded newspaper is gods gift to sakes :)

I used to stuff the hides of my boas with it and they adored it. Big piles of it can also be used as "hides". I regularly found corns curled up inside a ball of shredded newspaper on the warm end :)

Plus its so cheap and easy to replace.

thanks for all the great input. Right now I'm using paper towel, cut by hand into 1/4" x 4" strips and Twist seems to like it. It's fluffy enough so that he can burrow, but white enough that I can quickly find and remove waste.

I switched because we recently had a really bad mite problem that's now been eliminated, but I'm keeping an eye out for the next few days to make sure those little %^&% pests don't come back to torment my snake.

So, I think we're going to get an inexpensive shredder from the local 'mart' store and go from there. Thanks again, everyone. :)

If you go with the grain you can simply tear newspaper really easily :) That way the edges are nice and fluffy and you can control the width of the strips :)

My normal, Mousetrap, LOVED his shredded newspaper. I shredded it by hand, in fear that in sharp edges might cause problems. Plus, if you shred it in a certain way, the strips will curl, and it becomes nice and fluffy, which was his FAVORITE. He'd curl up in a pile of curled paper for DAYS.
