Paper towels and UTH

Spirit

Does anyone know how hot they get (or rather the surface of the glass)? I found something online about 35 degrees, but it didn't give me a model, wattage or size of the UTH.

How likely would a burn occur using just paper towels?

35C or 35F?

I don't use UTHs so I'm not going to speculate but it would be really easy to find out if you have a IR thermometer.

Well since 32F is freezing... lol

IR = digital? I'm working on finding one that has a humidex also, for a reasonable price.

hi spirit,
in my experience, my UTH (exo terra heat wave 8x8) ran just over 100 degrees directly on the glass. i ended up having to get a thermostat to keep the temps down to about 89 on the glass and 86 on top of the substrate (aspen).

and from what i gathered from my research, there is another brand out there (zoo med i believe) that sells two types, one that runs 90f and the other 100f.

hope this helped!

Just cuz Canucks use metric doen't mean everyone else should

IR as in aim at the surface and push the button. (It hasn't got a probe)

Stef: I'm more concerned about burning my snake than ruining the paper towels. He's using the small one also (8x8', 8 watts) so I'll have to test it properly. My thermometer isn't digital (sorry CAV, no buttons) so hopefully I can find that good digital one I've been looking for.

But what about the large 25 watt ones? Do they get hotter (logic tells me yes)?

Thanks, guys. :)

IR therms can be ordered online and they have become fairly inexpensive. I much prefer using it over a digital one.

I can't order online (cash only), but can you point me out to one so I know what I'm looking for in the stores? Thanks Gary. :)

Woah, what happened to inexpensive? And that one doesn't appear to have a hydrometer either (or is it hydrodex?). AND it's in USD which means it's around $62 here.

Wow... thanks CAV, but I'll pass on that one. We do have a radio shack here though but the canadian website doesnt' seem to have much. I'll head on in later this week and see what the store has. :)

Right now though I'm kind of hoping someone will theirs for me. ;)

But back to my original post. How high is the risk of a burn, on paper towels or direct contact?

yeah, i'm dumb (reading IS fundamental)...i went back and edited so i actually made a little sense. i guess you were too quick and caught me before i finished.

and....
the advice i was given is that the glass temp should not go above 90f. anything higher than this does pose a burn risk to the snake. so i would think if you could find one that operates at 90, you'd be fine. otherwise you might have to get a thermostat to be sure it doesn't get too hot.
