Scamps in the Lloyd mall in Portland, Or. I know pet stores are horrible at taking care of pets but this store got a clutch of red tail boas and some corns. They never have any water they are always trying to curl around the heat source and I think they are feeding the corn snakes crickets. Two of the boas look like they are getting rot mouth from rubbing their noses raw on the wire mesh lid. They took one of the boas and put it in a small holding container where it can barely get around its skin is all wrinkly and looks like it hasn’t been feed in weeks. It just lays there in the tank never moving. I watched its sides move so it’s still alive but it looks like it should be dead. The geckos look the same way. It’s very sad the one gecko he wasn’t there today I think he died. When you ask them questions all they do is tell you a bunch of B.S. but people listen to them.

I am so angry and I feel so bad for them does anyone know if there is anything I can do?
This has got to be considered animal abuse.
 
You just described 3/4 of the petstores around here.

It is animal abuse. But reptiles don't have button-noses and puppydog eyes so it doesn't get any attention. :angry01:
 
My goal is to one day open a pet house. So I can change the bad name thats given to pet stores and give people the correct information about an animal. It will be the animals temporary home not temporary hell. I love animals and hate how they are treated in pet stores and by some people. The only reason i go to the pet store is to help tell people how they should actually take care of an animal and what info i know about them and where to get more. It makes the other employes made but oh well i feel im doing some good. I tried to get hired there to help improve things and they told me i was over qualified I think it was so i wouldnt make them look bad.:rofl:
 
Scamps is a notoriously bad local chain. I have personally been to their Lakewood, WA store and took photos of an entire room of reptiles without water. Not a single viv had water in the dishes. They had mixed lizard species together in tanks and had too many lizards in other tanks. Tanks all over the store were without water. They were reported to the local animal control officer and they were warned. I haven't been back because they make me sick. So you need to contact Animal Control and report them. Document dates, times, conditions. Get pics if you can. After that, I recommend you never go back to Scamps.
 
I will defiantly try to do that. I feel so sorry for that boa; it’s a nice looking boa too. I might post a pick if I can get some. I will have to wait till tomorrow. Thanks

if you think they're bad, avoid Rose City Reptiles/Metro Pets


what ever you do, DO NOT BUY THE SNAKE. DO NOT BUY ANYTHING. This just supports them. If they sell the snakes, they'll get more, and even MORE ANIMALS WILL BE NEGLECTED.

Come out to Tigard, just off I-5 (on the 12 bus route if you need it) and come to House of Reptiles. Link is in my signature. You won't find anyplace else like us in the PacNW!

I dont have the room nor the money and I dont buy anything from pets stores cause i dont know where its been. I just go to look and manly play with the rabbits cause I raised them when I was younger. My corn came from an accident breeding. The house of reptiles is a great place and that is where I went to get my snake sexed and to get the stuff for his tank. They where a great help.
 
Here is a reminder to everyone. If you have a problem with a PET STORE in the way they are keeping their animals. you can contact the City and make a formal complaint. Every city is different on who takes care of this but its a good start at animal control and then call around. Seriously, you have a problem, make an offical complaint.. Ranting here does nothing to help those animals or do anything with the store.
 
There was a pet store near our house...same story.

First I called and spoke with the mamager....then the store owner (not a big chain store).

Then I called the local Animal Humane Society...got the number if their animal investigator (mind you I think MN only has one full time and 2 part timers-but you have to start somewhere).

The system was to leave the relevant information (can be done anonymously).

I have checked in a couple times since and they no longer 'carry' several of the Chameleons and lizards...Still hav ethe bunnies but they are not in 10 gallon vivs anymore...So someone either called them on it or they figured it out on their own.

The biggest thing though is that I do not buy anything from places I can't support otherwise...yeah it's incinvienient but we are lucky to have 2 reptile stores in this area that although are a bit more $$$ at least I feel good I am 'doing the right thing' by buying from them...or the online reptile suppliers.

Trickster is right, the story is not a new one, no-one here can do anything remotely but you did a great job by not just ranting, but by asking what to do:)

Also, if you have a local Herpetological Society they may have contacts/informaiton that would get the ball rolling.

Looks like everyone here has given you great advice on what steps you can take. You may also want to revisit the pet shop, ask to speak to a manager and explain that the reptiles need to be taken care of properly and see if they make any changes.

I have had many similar experiences with local pet shops, and most of the time, speaking to a manager and being firm with them usually does the trick..... but not always. That's when you take that next step of calling animal control/ the humane society.

I have even offered to work for one of the pet shops I visited, just so they would have someone who at least knows how to take care of reptiles (or research how if I'm not familiar with the species). They cleaned up their act for a few months, but now things seem to be reverting back to nasty again. :angry01:

It's tough being a reptile lover in a world full of people who could care less about them. :realhot:
 
wow the scamps near the town center had better then normal setups for the display reptiles and actually sent me to house of reptiles for the right equipment and advice on my snake. you should talk to the manager fist and see if you get anywhere.
 
The only stores around here are the major pet stores like petco and petsmart..Thankfully they aren't that bad with the way they take care of their animals..Yes they do co-hab the snakes but they never mix species..The lizards always seem to have plenty of water and food, and the other animals always seem to be in good shape as well...But there are some bad places here as well..like "Animals & Things"...horrible place...their snakes were on pine type bedding, very little water, ALL their snakes were very aggressive so they obviosly do not handle them well..and sheded skin can be found in the same cage for up to a week...horrible..

It is good to know that not ALL pet stores in the world are like this..There are places that actually love their animals and take good care of them..I just wish there were more of those kind of stores..

It at least "LOOKS" better
last time I was there was because they wanted me to take a look at one of the snakes they had...
It was an Amazon Tree Boa
it had three retained sheds
and was being housed with a ball python
