Petco rescue snake...

I have a feeling he'd be fine if some idiot didn't decide he was too small for pinkies and thus needed to eat crickets. Where the hell do they get their info anyway, Yahoo answers? If I applied for a job at Petco I'd surely get turned down due to "lack of experience" but yet these bumbling bozos are getting paid to neglect these poor things. I bet 90% die in their "care." It's just infuriating.

Surprisingly alot of people seem to think that you feed hatchling snakes crickets. We had a nonfeeder at work that my manager tried giving crickets and a rosie minnow. I told them not to and to try cutting the pinkie instead.

The problem with petsmart is the feed every 5 days and if the snake doesn't eat the offer it food everyday till it eats which just stresses it out more.

I was "politely" asked to leave a Petsmart when I over heard the employee telling a woman that an adult finch would make a wonderful "finger tamed" pet for her 13 year old daughter. UGH I spoke up! I have raised, fostered, rescued, and rehabbed, parrots for the last 20 plus years and it ticked me off when I heard him tell her that. I gave the woman correct information about finches, parakeets, cockatiels, etc and then gave her the name of a wonderful breeder where she would not pay pet store prices, get a healthy hand fed tame companion for her daughter. I also gave her my number and told her she could call me with any questions she had. The manager waited until the woman walked away from me and then said "I'm sorry but we're going to have to ask you to leave" I said "Oh thats fine but you better educate your employees if you do not want people like me to point out that they are ignorant and giving false information just to make a sale!"

My avatar snake was a Petco find. I didn't know any better when I got her. The other snake we got at the same time died within the first year. I believe he may have been a stargazer by the way he moved (once more I didn't know better.) The surviver is a hearty little beast, she has regurged three times but has so far bounced back. I wasn't expecting her to survive the winter, but she's getting muscle tone and has kept down three pinks a week. Next feed I'm giving her a hopper tail that Balthazar wont miss as well. If your snake endures, which is possible, know that he has the heart of a lion.

Thanks for the motivation Dreamsnake. I really think this little guy is a fighter.

Wow, he looks really light orange if the colors are true.

You know, I've seen crickets jump around snakes before in pet stores (mostly when I ask to see something and they have to pull out a lizard cage near by as well, but eh), and snakes show no interest whatsoever. How do you get a corn snake to eat a cricket!?

I bet he wasn't even eating at all. I wonder how long he was there and if he even had is first shed? The idiots were completely clueless as to how long he was in that torture chamber. Garter snakes eat bugs, not corns! They are not designed to eat insects of any kind!! Ugh! My blood boils just thinking about them! :headbang:

But he actually has nice colors for a hatchling. I believe he'd be a stunner as an adult.

I know you all like to take shots at the workers at chain and mom and pop pet stores, but, I have noticed that many of them just spit out what they were told. I have corrected many of my co-workers already on many different animals, and especially about co-habing corn snakes. I have even caught the store manager giving out the wrong information, luckily she allowed me to take over, and once she went into the office, I told the person what they really needed.
Working for Petco at the moment, I can tell you that there is usually only one person that is allowed to feed the reptiles. It is the manager that is over the animal department, and she has not given anyone any information on when the snakes were last fed and what, which is why I am going to go ask what we are feeding them and if my fears are correct, and I really hope not. I will be giving the manager a really hard time about the correct way to take care of them.
I will keep you guys posted on the situation at the branch I work at.

I understand that pet stores, especially the larger chains, have high turnovers but they should have stricter training policies to make sure that the employees handling the animals they sell get the proper care and that customers are given the correct information. I do not believe they are all evil or that all should be avoided but I do believe if you are selling animals they should know how to care for them properly. It has been my experience, dealing with resuced parrots, that impulse buying is one of the biggest problems. People buy an animal and have no clue what they are getting in to until after they buy it. RESEARCH!!!! If you see an animal that catches your eye and that you think you want, go home and research research research!

I tell everyone I talk to about animals to go online and research the animal before buying one. It may cut down on sales, but our motto at petco is the animal first. I have actually politely refused to sell a guy fish because he had just gotten the tank. I told him it would be best to set it up and let it cycle for a week or two with the correct conditioner, before getting the fish.

On the training side, all of the training we get at Petco about the animals is on these cheesy video's that they show us the first few days we are in there. I picked those things apart, oh, and our "care" sheets aren't that great either, so if an associate decides to take initiative and try to learn from them, they are getting just extremely basic info and info that is mainly put there to make sales. I usually do not even give the people a care sheet, but I send them to the various websites that I have frequented in the past that have helpful people that know what they are talking about.

I have to agree with Josie. But I would rather buy from the Petco that is 30-45 minutes from me, then the one that is 10-15 minutes. The one I would rather go to, the employees know more. I got my Sunshine from that petco, I know shocker. But they told me when she last ate, what day they feed them on, and what size meal she was on. The only thing they couldn't tell me was her age, color morph, and gender, but I already expected that. And I researched about Corn snakes before I got her. My only real problem is that they keep more than one snake to a cage.

Beautiful corn snake by the way. I will defiantly keep an eye on this thread for updates.

That's why I said that any store selling animals has a responsiblity to those animals to make sure that everyone caring for those animals knows the proper care and handling. They should demand it! I know it's their goal to move them in and out as fast as possible but that doesn't mean they should get substandard or just flat out poor care while they are in their care.

I'm only mad at this one in particular. The Petland where I got my Shamika is very knowledgeable with reptiles. Even though they cohab them there, they are fed separately and never fed crickets and the guy who sold me the snake seemingly knew just about everything about them. Petsmart also had nice healthy looking corns. I just wish they would get proper training and maybe not hire people who are afraid of the animals.

I couldn't work at the one by my house. I am terrified of spiders and they have a ton of them. I couldn't get close, let alone be asked to care for them. *shiver*

Most of the petsmart/petcos around me are pretty bad, the employees don't like touching the snakes, and you see crickets running around in the corn vivs which usually have tiny skinny little corns in them.

I got my first corn from a petland about 30 mins away kind of on a whim, which was my fault. It died within 2 days so we got another one for free which is doing great now, but was a problem feeder at first. After I did my research I discovered that the petland was just as bad as the petcos/petsmarts around here, they were telling me to feed my new corn crickets >_< I already knew that was wrong but I said sure and left.

Speaking of employees. I made a girl at Petsmart wet herself. I was looking at corn snakes and I got someone to help out. But they asked someone else to help. Well the girl that was helping me got the cage out and went looking for the snake. I already saw where the snake was and before I could say anything she done had the plant out and the snake fell in her lap. She said "Oh, $h!t!" I was laughing on the inside. lol

So I fed Albus yesterday about 2/3 of a pink. At first he started to eat it on his own but I did a messy job of cutting it so he spit it out before swallowing. After that I fixed the pink and made it smaller but he wouldn't have anything to do with it so I assisted him and he eventually ate. He's doing good right now and also had a nice long drink this morning.

Have you though of trying to find day old pinks? You may have a local mom and pop pet store that has some if you are lucky. They are very small and may be perfect for the little guy.

What exactly does "Mom and pop" mean? Family owned? There are only big chains around here. We have Petcos, Petlands, and Petsmart. I can try looking at the Petco here. I assume you mean live?

Mom and Pop is not a chain store, I know the guy who has a private owned pet store out here, is very passionate about his snakes. Even though he does cohab corns of the same sex, and It bugs me every time I go in there.

There are places online that you can order f/t day old pinkies, but I am not sure how many you would need, or what websites sell them. I know there are people here to order f/t from rodentpro, I haven't looked at their stock so I am not sure if they have day old pinks.
