I needed a heat pad for my corn snake's new 20 long critter cage... I got one of those 8x8 Sauna Zone heat mats by Kritterz. Don't take the term "sauna zone" lightly... dang thing won't go below 89 degrees!? I'm using that $9 dimmer sold at Wal-mart. Any suggestions? It says not to remove it once stuck on. I didn't have any duct tape so I couldn't tape it on..

Anyway, is this okay for him, or do I really need to peel it off and get a different heat pad? (I don't think I can return it since I threw away the packaging and the garbage/recycling people came this morning.) He's a burrower, so obviously he can get to the glass. He's there now, but not directly on top of it, by the looks he appears to be 1/3 on, 2/3 off. I know it's a bit warm, but it obviously can't burn him. This is seriously as low as I can get it. If I pull the switch a little closer to the off position, it just shuts off to room temperature. Should've got the Zoo Med one... :rolleyes:

I don't think it's the dimmer as it could put the Zoo Med one down to 82-84... but maybe... I still think it's the actual pad.
 
Just for future reference, I stick my uth's to a piece of 8 X 10 glass from a picture frame so that I don't have to unstick it from my tanks if I should change positions or size.
 
I would suggest you simply cut a well fittted peice of cardboard to lay inside the tank under the stubstrate make it thick enough and a good fit so that it cools the heat a bit and the snake cant get on top of the pad.

Something that actually works good if you use a 20 gallon tank is the fedex or ups shipping envelopes . They fit in their quite nicely.
 
If your snake likes to burrow he'll work his way under pretty much anything, so I wouldn't really rely on a piece of cardboard inside the tank. Either try to get the mat off the tank and mount it on a piece of ceramic tile or glass first or try a thermostat.
 
i have heard you can mount the UTH on the side of the viv, will heat right through the substrate without worries of burns. . .well will still probably need a bit of insulation to cool it

Well his problem is that he has already stuck it on, and does not want to take it off, plus if he put it on the side the snake could just go lay up against the glass on the side, and burn itsself, i have personally peeled them off the bottom of tanks before, if you do just becareful tomake sure that it all stays as one piece.
