This is a floresent orange male named "Vic". He is on breeding loan from Serpwidgets. I love the color on this guy and the pic does not show how awsome his color really is.

nice corn

That looks like a nice snake. how many of those mice do you feed him??? my snake is about the same size and when he does eat he will probably happily get through 3-5 of those in one feed. i don't think i should feed him that much though so i limit it to 3 a week. you should see the picture of my snake in an earlier post.

best of luck with him/her

Joe

Joe,

In my opinion, your snake doesn't even need 3 mice per week! You are putting your snake's health at risk by over-feeding him. An adult male snake typically needs 1 adult mouse every 7-14 days.

Compare it to a child and candy...the child will typically eat as much as you give him...that doesn't mean it is good for him!

Agreed. Feeding every three days or so during a growth spurt is one thing. Feeding 3 adult mice to an adult corn is going to make him/her obese in very short order.

I don't know what they are talking about the mouse in the pic was 1 of 8 I feed him that day. lol, na, just kidding. That was the only mouse he got I will feed him one of those once per week for now. Males will can go off food during breeding. During the summer I may even skip a feeding and he may only eat once every 14 days. The most he will get is two mice at a time.

Thanks for the comments,

Don

well, that is interesting, i DONT think i will be trusting my local reptile store from now on, they told me to feed the snake as much as he/she wanted, if they dont want to eat then it is because they are not hungry, i thought they were right because he lost weight when i used to only feed him one mouse a week, so they told me i needed to feed him more mice, probably just a creuel tactic to get me to buy more mice.

Cheers for the help.

We were commenting on joedr's post saying that he feeds his corn 3 mice per week.

Nice flo orange though, hopefully he helps provide some nice looking babies.

Joe Dr. And Simon also commented on the animal and those were the comments I was reffering too. But thanks for pointing out whats going on lol.

Thanks

Don

Joe...

Has your snake gained a bunch of weight since you started feeding it more? You do have to adjust a little to fit your snake's needs. If your snake was losing weight (and it didn't need to) when you were feeding 1 mouse per week, then try two mice. Three mice per week is really too much.

Man I gotta make friends with Serpwidgets so he can send me stuff like that!!

Serp, will you be my friend??

Don, I'm glad you like him. He's got the most amazing oranges I've seen on a "regular old amel." I hope he's as fertile for you as he has been for me. :D

I've got some great kids from him. Here's Tiger, one of his daughters from 2002:

And Flake, one of his sons from 2001:

sweet pics Serp, but you didn't mention being my friend though...I guess I'll take that as a NO:crying: :crying: :crying: :crying: :crying: :crying: :crying:

she has put some weight on but doesn't look fat, looks just right, as she has not eaten for 4 weeks anyway i think she will loose a bit, i think my snake is female and is ovulating so she looks like she has just eaten anyway but her belly is a bit softer than normal. you dont think that is anything to worry about???

i am going to put in som moist tissue paper in her hide so if it is female and ovulating she will not get egg bound. if that is the wrong thing to do please say so.

I'm not sure what effect, if any, putting moist paper towel in her habitat would have on egg binding. Also if you haven't bred her with a male I'm not sure how much risk there is for egg binding.

At any rate I believe the best prevention for egg binding would simply be to exercise the snake quite a bit. That and make sure she's in good shape before she is bred.

I am not going to brees my snake but i read that a snake may still need to lay even if the eggs have not been fertalised. i also read that a snake can get eggbound if it does not lay its eggs (if it needs to) a lot of people put moss in a hide but it is a pain to get hold of where i live so i am using a dish cloth aswell. i am also putting it in there for the bad shed she/he has just had as i also believe that helps. she/he seems to like it anyway. lol.

cheers for the advise

Joe, you can order Spagnum moss from This site in the UK. They also have an excellent forum that is used by a lot of knowledgeable snake keepers in the UK.

You are getting sound advise here from these very helpful people but if you want to post on the forum I mentioned about the shop that sold this corn and gave the bad advise, people would be interested.

There is a section for comments on shops and your comment might stop somebody else getting bad advise and endangering their new pet.

Good luck with the snake, she's lovely, if a little porky!
