Pinkie snatcher!

I have a small colony of rats 1.3. The first mom gave birth 3 days ago and my wife is freaking out that their not getting to eat. Explanation is one of the females is a hairless dumbo (meaning that the wife and kids hold her all the time) she has never given birth but is pregnant. Well I can already tell she is going to be the best mother since she has snatched all the babies over and over. The real mom gave up trying to get them back. Since the dumbo has never gave birth can she feed the babies? She should be birthing any day now, so I'm not sure. If you go near the tub she thinks your going to hold her so she jumps up and I can't tell if their suckling or not. Thanks for any help.

If you she is due to drop any day now I would say she is is already lactating. It is normal for one to steal all of the babies but she can only feed so many before there is no more room.

Thanks for your reply my wife was still worried so she took the dumbo out and held her for awhile so the mom was with them for awhile. They ate which made her happy. It's funny how my wife can be so concerned one minute and then the next tell me how many I need for feeding.

Make sure the real mother has private contact with them several times daily, or she may stop feeding them alltogether. You don't want this because if your HDR gives birth to 15 babies, you're going to be royally screwed..

Is there any way you can sperate them? I often seperate my females when they become greedy with their babies, and if they're close enough in age, I usually even out the litters so that each mom has the same amount and same size ratio of babies. This helps to make sure they all grow at the same rate.

Good luck. :wavey:

She only had ten of her own. In total that would be 15. She does allow the mother of the first five to periodaclly come and stay in the nest for awhile now though. It took me awhile to count them because she has taken to snatching them up as soon as you touch the tub and scattering them all over. I guess she also, bite my wife earlier when she was trying to check on them. They are growing so the must have been eating enough anyway.
Thanks
