Pinky or Fuzzy for new Corn Snake

I just acquired a new corn snake yesterday from a Reptile Expo in Raleigh, NC - which is my first snake. My snake is about 18+ inches long and about 3/4 inch in diameter at the widest. I am getting ready to place an order for some frozen mice tomorrow and wanted make sure I was getting the right size. I understand that corns can eat up to about 1.5 times their diameter, but I am unsure what diameter the fuzzies typically are - I know that pinkies will be fine, but I can only order in quantities of 50 ct. (Big Cheese Rodent Factory) except on Layne's Labs which will do 25 ct. which in that case I could get one of each (pinky and fuzzy). I also read that it is better to be able to feed one than multiple at feedings if possible. I understand that 50 ct. will last me a good while on one snake and as everyone knows, shipping costs are pretty high.

I asked the guy working the desk at the show and he didn't seem to knowledgeable about the colubrids, and suggested the pinkies.

Any thoughts from experienced owners?

most of the time pinkies are good for youger corns. and the other is for older probly after 2-3 years i think

Do you know what year your new Corn is (2010?, 2011?) or how much it weighs in grams? That information would help you so much. You could always refer to The Munson Eating Plan, until you get a better feel for your snake. Search MUNSON FEEDING PLAN, or...

Depending on how fast they grow, babies can move up to fuzzies about a year old.
Another way you can gauge size of prey is with a scale. Weigh your snake & the food source, & you can figure out what/how many/how often to feed from this guide:

The Munson Plan (Sample Feeding Chart): Revised 06/08/08

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

-When they're on single pinks (2-3g), I feed every 5-6 days. (Snake = 4-15g)
-Double pinks (3g x 2) every 5-6 days. (Snake = 16-23g)
-Small fuzzies (5-7g) every 6-7 days. (Snake = 24-30g)
-Regular fuzzies (7-9g) every 6-7 days (Snake = 30-50g)
-Hoppers (9-12g) every 6-7 days (Snake = 51-90g)
-Weaned (14-20g) every 7 days (Snake = 91-170g)
-Adult (20-30g) every 7-x days (Snake = 170+) See below.

Note: Adult females are fed more frequently than adult males (especially following brumation). Adult females are fed every 7-12 days; adult males are fed every 11-14 days.

This is by no means scientific, and not all corns will cooperate 100% with the schedule. The weight ranges I gave for the prey and snakes are approximate.

i am getting a snake in two weeks it is about8 inches how fast do they grow and when do i know when to move to fuzzie mice?

I have a corn that was hatched Sept 2010 and she eats fuzzies and when I have to feed her pinkies she eats 2, so I feed her fuzzies, if you go to my pic albums you can see the size I feed my corn

Once the eyes open I call em hoppers lol I fee bad you feed live but its your choice. No bashing here. Do wish I could get that fuzzy though for my breeding stock, I like the color lol!

Its okay, and I actually still have that one its a hopper now I havent sexed it yet but I got to do it sometime this week but pm me and we'll talk bc I really dont need it I had 2 that had litters at the smae time and I was just going to let it grow and maybe breed it but not sure, but like I said just pm me and we'll talk more about it

RodentPro.com said they would do combined sized bags if I called, I just couldn't order online like that. I ended up not needing to because I shared the order with other people, but they were very open to it.

I know you are joking but for the sake of others who might read it and take you serious shipping live animals via postal services or even fedex is illegal and I just wanted to mention that so no one sees this and tries it.

^ It's illegal in some ways and legal in some ways. :shrugs:

I would be extremely, EXTREMELY concerned if a corn was only graduating to fuzzies at 2-3 years of age when some corns can breed at that point...

I was letting that one slide. I think most folks know that pinks are really only eaten for the first 6 months or so for corns . . .but good to point that out in case of new people.

"This probably sounds bad, but that's a really cute fuzzy."
I'm with you there :-/ I'm afraid that if I was feeding live & the fuzzie looked that cute I'd b hard pushed to feed it to my snakey. Kind of hypocritical of me I guess, being happy to feed them to my snake once the mouse is dead & prepared but not being able to face them live. Similar to me eating meat from a supermarket but I'd never be able to visit a slaughter house. But anyway, your not alone in your thoughts.
