As I am setting up my 29 gallon viv, I know my corn wont need it for a while, I have begun getting things ready. I am planning on having four small slow growing and hardy plants as well as a grass patch to roam through. I was wondering, I plan on growing the grass from seeds, is potting soil okay to use in the terra cotta pots i ail be outing the plants in? Should I grow them in my Eco earth substrate in the pots? Also I was given the idea of using half of a coconut shell as hide, is that okay for corn snakes? I have a co worker with a 90 gallon aquarium that he said he could sell me for cheap. Is that way too big for a full grown corn or would it offer more roaming space?

Potting soil will be fine as long as it doesn't have any added fertiliser and hasn't been trated with pesticides or herbicides.

When I tried plants in my viv, the snakes just knocked them over and spread compost all over the viv. They ended up very muddy and gave me a constant cleaning job for a few weeks until I gave up in favour of the plastic versions. Plus the plants just ended up squashed and mangled.

Beware that a terracotta pot is pretty heavy and could hurt a Corn if they knock it over and it falls on them. Might be worth looking at the more stable trough forms, rather than traditional plant pot shapes with the narrower base.

Half a coconut makes a great hide.

I always say the bigger the better for a tank. Your main problem will be trying to find or make a lid which is escape-proof, but if you can manage it and you have room, then it'd be fantastic for a Corn. Bear in mind that they don't appreciate wide open spaces and prefer to be hidden out of sight, so the only thing I'd do differently is stuff it with as many hides and as much ground cover as I could.
 
+1 to what Bitsy said. I was considering live plants myself, but eventually discarded the idea in favor of plastic versions.

Corns do like to burrow and like moist substrate - if you want to put in grass, it might be a good idea to cover the soil with a mesh and let the seeds grow through it.
