Hi everyone, :wavey:

I was wondering if anyone could help me w/ the genetics of 3 of my breeder Corns.

For the last 2 years I have breed a Female ZigZag het Ghost,(w/ Creamsickle blood in her) x ZigZag Ghost. The results have always been Hypos, Normals, Ghosts and Anerytheristics.

This year I breed a different Male Ghost to the same Female ZigZag. The results this time were Hypos,Normals, Ghosts, Snows and an Amel. NO Anerytheristics.

My question is what are the genetics of -

a)the Female mentioned above?

b)the first Male ZigZag Ghost mentioned above?

c)the second Male Ghost mentioned above?

I guess I am just wondering how I got Snows and an Amel this time and NOT the first time around. :eek1:

Thanks!!!
Warren C.

Well, let's see.

a- Your female zz must be het amel, anery 'A', and hypo

b- The first Ghost male is not het for amel but is homo for anery 'A' and hypo

c- The second Ghost male is het amel and homo for anery 'A' and hypo.

Creamsicle is the result of Great Plains Rat (emoryi) crossed with an amel corn. That's where the amel gene appeared from in the female.

The lack of anery 'A' in the second clutch is just the result of the odds. Anery 'A' did appear but with hypo in the Ghost babies.

I think I got that all right, sometimes those things can get jumbled up in my brain! ;)

Oh, the ZZ gene doesn't always or never does act like a simple recessive gene. That is up for grabs on what will appear.

I second what Clint said. ;) Be sure you let your potential buyers know that there is emoryi blood (not matter how diluted) in the hatchlings. :)

Thanks Clint and Carol!! That info helps a lot!!

Yes Carol, I was planning on adding that info when I made the sale on those animals. I, like you and many others, want to keep the public well informed.

Hey Carol, that Upper Keys female that is related to your Upper Keys laid again for me this year. How about your Upper Keys this year? How did she do for you?

Take Care!!

Well she layed 30+ eggs and they all went bad. I kind of forgot to breed her for a second clutch and got only 6 more fertiles, some of which are going bad. I don't know why, I gave her the year off last year and the year before she had a 100% hatch rate. Beats me. I got some super grandkids of hers though!

Hey Carol, Sorry to hear you had such bad luck!! I hope next year will be better for you!

Cheers!
