I'm looking for feedback on my terrarium for my corn snake. I've had him for about a month and a half, and am thinking about buying a 50 gallon tank because my friend has 30% off this weekend. Would this be too big for a snake that is around 3 months old? If so, can I buy another corn snake, and put them both in it?? Also, just let me know what you think about the terrarium, and I'll have more videos up soon that show the snake. Thank you.

A 3 month corn would get lost in a 50 gallon glass tank! There's no such thing as "too big" seeing as they are routinely hatching outdoors and doing a pretty good job. But it would be hard to find, and even tougher to keep up with feeding, sheds, etc. And if there wa a regurge or something, you might never find it. I'm assuming the tank is a 55 (48 X13 footprint) but if it's a 40 or 50 Breeder (36 X 18) it's my favorite sized corn snake enclosure.
You viv is very nice! You have a lucky corn snake.

Thank you for the comment about my current setup!! I assume it's 50 gallons... I figured up the area in INˆ2, and then converted to Gallons. I may have miscalculated. To be exact, it's a 36x18x18 made by exo-terra. I wanted to give him more room to climb, and since I don't have many decorations, I don't think I'll have a problem losing him. One thing I'm trying to avoid is him having to get used to another enclosure right around the time that he finally gets familiar to the one he is currently in (if that makes sense). I'd much rather him begin to get comfortable with the enclosure he will more than likely be in for the remainder of his life, ya know??

I just wanted to be clear that it is harder to keep an eye on your reptile. And I'm not sure those are designed to hold a hatchling snake. I have some, and the tops do latch well and there isn't much gap on the glass doors. I'd worry about a tiny baby getting out, though. For sure I wouldn't keep that foam background in there, if your came with one. They look cool, but that's just a ladder for them to go straight to the top to poke their head in every crevice... and does your lid have that little cut outs for wires? Examine the set up thoroughly, remembering that they have nothing to do but try to escape every second you aren't watching them. If there is something they can get through, they eventually will.

That stuff aside, if you are sure you can keep him from escaping, what a cool set up to watch a baby corn grow up in!

I just uploaded this video of him to show his size. I haven't bought the enclosure yet, but I'm fairly sure that exo-terra makes a good product to prevent escapees. (I will definitely check for holes, though, that a baby could fit through!! Thank you for the heads up! Read the description on the youtube page to get a sense of my question. Thank you for all your help!!

I am just wild guessing from the video, but I'd say your corn is within the ballpark of 25 grams. Not a worm, but still small enough to get through anything such as plastic holes in the molding for an electrical cord to run. Exo Terra makes very good products, I am not disputing that (I sell them), but baby snakes will be baby snakes.

Gotcha. Since I'll be getting a fairly good deal (I think so) on the 36x18x18, do you think it'd be a good idea to buy it now, and let him crawl around for about 15-20 minutes a day to get used to the new tank??

I *doubt* it will make much difference. Since it looks like he gets out and allowed to crawl all the time, it would probably come as less of a shock to him than one who came from a shoebox with only a paper towel and a water bowl to explore.

Ok! That's really the only thing I'm worried about is the stress coming from the new terrarium. Do you have any advice to try and get that final piece of skin off his head?? It hasn't came off ever since his first shed!! I thought it would eventually come off, but it's been a couple weeks now, and I don't know what to do.

Of course, I base that on nothing scientific, it would just stand to reason.

Give him a humid hide. I use sphagnum moss, but even a damp sterile sponge would probably do in a pinch. Use a little tupperware disposable container he would have to curl up to fit in, put moist medium in it. In a shoebox with nothing but a paper towel, flattened tp roll, and water bowl, they'll crawl right in it. That is usually all it takes. A damp towel should do the trick if it isn't completely off the next day.
