These are very cool.
Raytek® MT2 Noncontact Thermometer
With Temperature ranges of : -18 to 260° C (-0° - 500°F)

"Non Contact" Thermometers are Portable, Pocket-sized & easy to use.
Take surface temperatures of any object quickly and easily.
Point, pull the trigger, and read the temperature on the display.

Prices have been going down..., I've just seen these for $64 bucks U.S. for one with a lazor sight over at yahoo shopping, they just became affordable in my book.
Finally gonna break down and spend the dough.
I read in another thread that Rich Z. has grown fond of these great little gizmos. I don't know which model he has though and he may even have another brand for all I know.
The fact that one can go Corn to Corn (species to species) and quickly and easily take every bodies individual temperature, could make this state of the art gizmo easy to fall in love with.
Something you never knew you needed :)

[Yeah, I've been thinking of getting one of those...Radioshack has thiers on sale for $29.99...it's a little less accurate, though, +/- 4 degrees rather than +/- 3 degrees with the raytec, and doesn't have a laser sight.

My mother-in-law got me the little one from RadioShack for Christmas (I think she only payed $24.99), and this thing is great. I use it all the time!

Sure, it doesn't have a laser site, but come on...how hard is it to point at something? And it's about $75.00 less!

The RadioShack one looks the same as the one's you see listed and being sold by other Reptile businesses, with their name on them, on KS. And these are going for about $50.00.

Hope that helped,
Brian

Thats a deal...under 30 bucks

Good quality for the money that probably is,I have some nice little Radioshack digital min / max thermometers that are well built that I have used for years.

I'll bet the +/- factors are much more of a factor and consideration at 400 degrees farenheit than it is at 82 with these "things". It may be plus a degree farenheit, but if its always plus a degree F...My guess is that there very accurate at room type temperatures.

I just don't know if its certifiable as a gizmo without a lazer though ;)

The Raytek are fantastic, once you get one you will not know what you did without it. Great for being able to know precise hot and cold spot temps, good for spot readings of animals being cooled for winter (when temps get as low outside as they do here) and great for making sure temps are not too high or low when you are travelling to shows or set up at shows - can check instantly. We use ours for everything - even checking aquarium water temps when refilling fish tanks. With snakes it is amazing how often the animal temp is above the temp of the environment - they stay pretty stable. Great fun to have - would definately recommend it.

I have the Raytec model with the laser. The price is definetly getting down there on them. I was in a panic the other day. It was missing from my herps room. It would seem that my wife has found an alternate use for the laser. Our three cats go nuts over it. I quickly explained to her that at 79.00 this was way to expensive for entertaining our cats. Don't get me wrong I love the cats--just not as much as the snakes. Oh I love the wife too--just not as much as @#!%^$&(&%$@$&*OWWW I'm sorry I'm sorry!--I mean I love my wife more than the snakes.----

FYI... the laser is not just for the sighting but for the measurement itself, unlike some of the cheaper Infrared types the laser is actually part of the process. I was lucky enough to borrow one from a friend who's an automotive nut. Turned out my substrate was about 10 degrees higher than the stick on thermo on the end of the tank which is what I was worried about with an UTH. So now I have these thermos on each end of the tank that mean nothing

The Pros and Cons of...

What are the benefits of the Laser type over the infrared type devices?

Do they give more accurate readings?

I have used for years, a digital indoor / outdoor Thermometer with the 10 foot probe cord, that gives me accurate readings as far as checking actual substrate/ tank surface/ ambient temperatures...verifying other thermometers readings, etc.

This is the obvious next...
("kick it up a notch") ...step up from that.

Not to mention that it gives Corn snake husbandry practices a whole new dimension with the actual monitoring of the animals temperature...
