Prisa Shed!

Hi, guys, I haven't posted about my baby in a couple weeks, so here are some pics :3

She shed last night while I was asleep.

BTW, are those orange "freckles" normal on a snow? Her yellow/orange stripe is really thick and there seems to be a bit more orange than I've seen. It even is more orange on her stomach instead of that green on the rest, but only near her head/face where the yellow is.

Also, I'm pretty sure I wrongly identified her sex and I think Prisa might be a Priso, if you know what I mean haha.

Her skin :3

And his/her colors fade from orange to pink to more whitish the further along down his/her body...

That's why I keep asking about his/her morph :/ It just doesn't seem quite right for a snow...

Oooh pretty!
And she is a snow, but she looks like she may have something more going on with her. Very unique!

What a pretty snake! ^_^ Yes, I'll have to say snow as well, but an unusually colorful one! All that yellow!

The way to sex a snake that requires the least experience is to simply look at the tail...

Female tail above, male tail below. See how quickly the female's tail tapers off compared to the male's? Kathy Love's book says that this method is very accurate, though more so with experience. It uses the same recognition ability we all use to tell two people's faces apart, it just needs to be trained a little. I'd compare Prisa's tail to these two and see which (s)he most resembles. :) This method cannot hurt your snake, so it's at least safer than attempting to pop or probe the little one.

Also, if you still have the shed (and the patience), you can take a magnifying glass and count the scales in the rows on either side of the ventral side of the tail, starting at the vent. If the total of both sides is 130 or less, it's probably female; 140 or more is a male; between those two numbers could be either.

Since Prisa is so light-colored, you could also try shining a flashlight through the base of her tail in a dark room. Sometimes you can actually see shadows from the hemipenes (if they are present), though this method is by no means guaranteed.

Thank you Lycari, that was really helpful!

He gets a bit skittish-er when he's handled down-there, is that normal?

And upon further investigation, I've decided to take a picture!! :D

I'd say male. The opening is between my fingers.

Yes, that's normal. :) In my experience, snakes generally don't like having their tails manipulated, same as with their heads. Saga will try to pull her tail away when I mess with it. XD

Yep, I'd say that looks like a male tail. :) You gonna keep calling him Priso? XD
