As my house is getting to cold in the day down to 60 and my snakes is only in a starter tank atm the cold side of the tank is getting to cold. so i phone the reptile shop and i have now got a full size vivi with a heating lamp and pulse stat to keep the vivi at a constant temp, its now allmost set up but my question is, whare should i place the probe and what temp should i have the stat set to, as the man in the shop told me under the lamp will create the basking spot while the rest of the tank will maitain the correct temp 75.

gana simp that post

I have a 30x18x18 wooden tank with slideing glass front, will be heted via a 100w heat lamp(no light) and maintained by a habistat pulse stat.

Whare should the probe be places and what temp should the stat be set at?

The stat probe should be down the warm end, at the hottest point that the snake will usually spend its time.

As you're heating from above with a lamp, that will be on the surface of the substrate, immediately under the lamp.

If you're having the lamp inside the tank, please make sure that it's well protected. Corns can climb like crazy even without branches, and they don't have the sense to steer clear of a surface that's hot enough to burn them.

so should the stat be set for 85 and have the prob in the warm end then, and that should keep the tank an even 75 over all as today i came home and the tank had droped to 60

Set the stat to whatever gives you 85 degrees at the hottest part of the viv (regardless of what the dial on the stat says - sometimes they can be pretty innacurate). It doesn't matter if the cool side is lower than ideal, as somewhere in the middle will still be around 70 degrees.

The critical bit is getting the warm end hot enough, but not too hot. The cooler temps in the rest of the tank give the Corn a chance to thermoregulate by choosing it's own preferred temp. Make sure there are plenty of hides, so it isn't forced to be too hot or too cold. You'll probably be surprised at how much time they spend in the cooler zones.
