Progression thread: Normal Cape African house snake

Clyde looks great! And getting big ... seems like he's about to outgrow his cork round. Loopy hasn't even looked twice at the one I put in his viv a week or so ago. He mainly hides out in that hide with the damp moss. That's okay though. They use what they want ... all we can do is give them several options. I think Loopy is about to shed anyway, so it's good he's trying to stay 'humid'! I love the way Clyde just stays coiled up so you can take his pic.

Lol, "coiled so I can take his pic", ha ha! That's why I have so many that are blurry streaks.

Clyde loves his cork hides, but what you see in the pic is Cleo's old log that has been sitting unused on a shelf for months. After about a half an hour of activity, he settled down and I got the pics. Props are definitely the way to go to get house snake pics.

P.S. All my best to Loopy. I love your precious boy!
 
I wonder if in Africa they're showing up in homes unannounced? You know, like a house fly. My wife would not go for that!

Luckily, that was just a photo prop. Clyde will be getting larger hides soon. Trying to hold out for Tinley in October to purchase some.

I weighed him today. 68 grams. :)
 
Beautiful eyes! I grew up in South Africa and our house snakes, while still cool in their own right, didn't look as nice as these!

This is not Clyde. This is Norm and this is my son's pic of his 14+ year old house snake. My son sent me the pic this morning and I love it. Norm is the number one reason why I have Clyde so it's appropriate to share him here. I love Norm so much!

As you can see he looks a bit different than Clyde, and though Norm was only ever labeled "African House Snake" at the store so many years ago, I believe Norm is a Boaedon fuliginosus. Clyde is definitely a Boaedon capensis. They're still cousins, lol.
 
A Boaedon fuliginosus? I can't believe it! That's what I was gonna say! :laugh: Seriously ... Norm's a good lookin' snake. Glad he was around to inspire you to get Clyde!

Thank you. I sure love him. My daughter-in-law got Norm for my son before they were married. Believe it or not, he was from one of the 2 big P pet stores (can't remember which). Doubt you'll find a house snake of any kind there these days.
 
Here is Clyde's weight chart with shed dates. Since Clyde is fed in viv he is not weighed every feeding so the weigh dates do not correlate with feeding dates.

Very nice trend there for Mr. Clyde! I also keep a graph, I have a long excel document where I document everything I do with Jag / Jag does and every time I weigh, the weight goes in a 3rd column which gets graphed against date. Smart idea to put sheds on that too though.

I keep my data in the Snakekeeper app, and it kicks out .csv files for each category. It takes a little massaging to make a nice graph, but it is so nice to see it. With more work it could be even nicer and I may do that someday. It's easy to keep adding data to update it.

This is three columns, date, wt, and shed. In order to not have gaps in the wt line on the chart I do add a wt point on shed days if I didn't already take a weight on that day. It's usually pretty obvious which weight to to use. Often they are only one day different.
 
Clyde weighs 71 grams now and will be eating his first large fuzzy next feeding. The last few feedings have been 2 small fuzzies.

He was so fast today. The only way to get a full body shot was to contain him. His pattern shows up better in person. It is subtle and then vanishes halfway to his tail.

He's such a wonderful snake and has only ever struck at his food, but he can hold my fingers so tight it hurts!

He's fast and squirmy on the front end and firmly anchored at the back end. Just like in the second picture. He's extremely inquisitive. If I talk he will stretch up to my mouth. If I try to take a picture he will stretch out to the camera. Sometimes he will entirely wrap himself around my hand, but his head is still moving. That's very typical house snake behavior so he's doing what they do. No ball python, that's for sure!
