Prolapsed oviduct - photo

I have also been told Preparation H will help. It will reduce the swelling and help both oviducts and hemipenes to retract.

I would take her to the vet asap. As far as putting her in sterile water to shrink the tissue...I've never heard of that. The best method (other than surgical) would be to use a 5% dextrose solution, however that is something that a reptile vet should handle.

Good luck :)

Wannabe...this is an old thread. I am sure it has resolved itself in some way by now :D I would liuke to know the outcome, though.

One thing I wanted to mention is that in all of the years I have worked at a clinic, I have never seen using 5% dex solution work. I have seen it tried many times, but we always revert back to using plain old sugar. I guess dextrose solutions may work in some cases, but I think sugar works better.

Wow, I didn't realize that this thread had become active again. The female passed the rest of the eggs (all very large slugs) and seems to be recovering nicely. She was a little thin from the two clutches but ravenous, and after a couple months of feeding she is now brumating. I think I'll give her next spring off from breeding!

Glad to hear it all turned out ok. I heard from a well known boa breeder that Preparation H works great (and is safe) for these types of prolapse. It will quickly reduce the swelling. Something to keep in mind if it ever happens again.

Ronda,

Good to hear that she has passed all the eggs out.

But sigh..
this year it's my turn.
I have exactly the same problem. But mine's a bit worse...
cause I soaked her in luke warm water before. Didn't really seem to work and I recall in seeing thit thread before so I tried it with the sugar thing. Didn't work either. The prolapes oviduct might be a bit smaller now that I tried the sugar thing but I am not too sure. I still have at least 8-10 more eggs inside her...so I hope that she's going to do fine like yours too.

This was her frist time breeding...and I can't believe that she didn't even lay one single egg before she became egg bound....sucks! I was like..this big gal is going to be laying lots of eggs for me this year (I didn't breed her last year cause I wanted her to gain a big more weight...last year she was in shape too but I just wanted to wait...and I can't believe that she has egg bound without even laying anything yet...plus with the prolapsed oviduct...)

I don't know...this year I already have 2 females that got egg bound....and I have 5 females lay...4 were super small clutches from 2 eggs to 5 eggs and 1 regular clutch that kind of looks like slugs with 11 eggs there...

lol..I am hoping to have better luck later on in the year~~

Simon,
I'm sorry to hear of the troubles you're having this year. I hope they all work themselves out OK and the rest of your snakes do better.

Good luck!
