Proper Heating Questions

Ok so I have a Digital probe thermometer, a UTH, and a Rheostat and I am trying to get the temp right for my lil guy. Do I place the thermometer on top of the glass near the heater, on top of the heater, or on top of the substrate? How many inches of substrate should I use? I don't want to burn my baby up or freeze him to death.

At least an inch of substrate is preferable they do like to burrow.
You want to place the probe on the hottest spot your snake has acess to, and since that's the glass over the heater that's where it goes.

ok i got everything hooked up but the rheostat is at its lowest setting and i still get a temp of like 98 degrees F. Do you think it is my rheostat or thermometer messing up? I inched my hand down and felt the glass but it didn't feel super hot, just warm. My baby has never exhibited any signs of digging but that doesn't mean he can't and I don't want him to get burned

Also, do I still need to use a heat lamp in conjunction with the UTH or is just the UTH fine?

Well of course it doesn't feel super hot, given that our tempatures are a constant 98.6.

Check to see if it is indeed the thermometer by testing something else with a known tempature there is always the possibility it is off.

But on the other hand I would find it odd that your rheostat on it's lowest setting is still that hot.

I bought a zoomed rheostat thinking I'd use it to run the very small UTH on the 'cool' side over the winter to bring it up to 75. Like yours, it just put out too much electricity no matter how low I turned it down. If you can return it, you're probably better off taking it back for a zoomed 500 thermostat. I kept the rheostat to run a daylight lightbulb to help simutate prolonged days.

:-offtopic Are you going to the reptile show tomorrow? I'll be there and you might find a vender who has thermostats at a better price. I'll be there tomorrow around 11, I'm guessing. Look for bearded blonde guy with an LSU sweatshirt on (or tee shirt if it warms up).

Thanks for the advice. I just got it so it is not a problem returning it. Yep I will be at the show tomorrow :)
