I used one of my corns during a talk to an elementary class on career day. It was alot easier to bring than a dog or cat, plus added that touch of the exotic.

I'm hoping that someday in the future one, or both, of my kids would want me to talk to their class, especially about genetics. My corn snakes would be alot more interesting than pea plants!

I did my english talk at school about my Ball Python. I did a talk infront of my year and then the confadent people held my snake.

I gave a genetics talk at a local middle school, and this Friday I am supposed to talk to a group at a day care center. This will be the first time I have dealt with such small kids (2-4 years old) with the snakes so it will be an adventure. Any suggestions to help it run smoother would be greatly appreciated!!

Young kids are actually more fun and are far easier than adults. They are impressed by anything, and still have the innocent wonder of it all. Keep the talk simple, and use lots of visual aids.

I'm giving a seminar tomorrow on cornsnakes and hopefully will be allowed to take along a couple of my snakes (I say hopefully cos I'm taking them anyway!)

Thanks Meg! :) I'm super nervous...hope nothing drastic happens like losing the saved presentation or me falling flat on my face or burping mid sentance (I'm thinking the worst here ;) )!!!!!

I have taken a few snakes in last year when my son was in pre-school it was fun, and the kids were great. This year I took some to his kindergarden which was of course fun he loved it. The one thing you need to watch is kids love to grab the heads of snakes. No matter how many times I reminded them not to grab the head. They did it anyway, but that is what makes them kids right? I also took my buddies fat tail in as well, the kids loved him. When my buddy came to get the gecko (i was gecko sitting) he told me it bites, sure enough he stuck his hand in the cage and it ran up and bit him. It never even moved when the kids held it, go figure..

I don't want to put a damper on you folks enthusiasm but I would be very careful about letting children handle your snakes or other herps. The reason being the salmonella scare going on here in the U.S. It doesn't matter how clean your animals are or if you use hand sanitizers. If a child gets sick from their school lunch, the reptile will probably be blamed and you might be held libel. Having said this I still do demonstrations every year at the local school. I just don't let the kids handle the animals. Once I explain the situation the kids don't mind.

Kenster: I used to do presentations at the state fair here when I was younger, and I learned really quick that it is best if I hold the head end, and let kids hold/touch the middle and back of the snake. It keeps them from poking the poor snake in the face, and it also gives some reassurance to people who are afraid of snakes that it won't be able to bite them. This trick is even helpful getting adults who are afraid of snakes to interact with them.

Tim: Salmonella has definitely crossed my mind. I always make sure to have plenty of hand sanitizer on hand, and remind everyone to wash their hands again too. I worry about legal issues if someone gets sick, but I always warn folks up front, and I think it is a more enriched and memorable positive experience when you get to physically interact with an animal. Of course, I will still worry about it :awcrap:

Thanks!

Yes it is more memorable if the kids can hold the animal. I think it would be even more memorable for me if I had to hire a lawyer to defend me in a law suite. I'm just not willing to take the chance. I don't need the stress and don't have the funds if that should happen.
