Pyrethrin - How Long Til Safe?

Aozora

Blue Sky Reptiles
I'm currently staying in the basement of my mom's house, as apparently all mortgage lenders don't want my money. She lets all of her cats and dogs outside, and surprisingly enough they have fleas. One of her cats got downstairs one day and came near my cat (downstairs is the only area that's carpeted) and, BOOM, we have a flea infestation.

My mother insists that spraying with pyrethrin is the only way to get rid of all of the fleas. I know that it is deadly to snakes if they inhale it. I will be moving all of my snakes upstairs and safely out of the way of the vaguest hint of a wisp of pyrethrin. How long will I need to wait after spraying before I can move them back downstairs?

I was thinking 48 hours to ensure that it has all dried and they cannot inhale it. Will that be sufficient?

If it is toxic to snakes, I don't doubt it's harmful to other pets! :S

I seriously would go to a pet store and get a tick and flew powder and try that first!

A few years ago, I had guinea pigs who got "mice lice" as my mother called it. I bought this tick and flea powder from a pet store, and sprinkled it on the carpets and everything and just vacuum it up after a bit - and obviously treated my guinea pigs. After the first use they were completely gone! I did a second round just to be sure.

I would seriously consider all other alternatives than something potentially toxic to your snakes :( that would be so sad if they were to get ill or die!

Pyrethrin is not safe for cats to inhale either. It can cause liver damage. My kitty will be upstairs, getting a flea bath and a flea pill and drying out, while we spray downstairs.

Mom and I got in a big fight over it. She insists there is no other way that will work and that since the downstairs where I live is where it's infested it's my fault and I have to clean it and her house her rules and blah blah blah. So I don't have a choice in the matter. Pyrethrin, this weekend.

How long do I keep my snakes upstairs so they are safe? Someone please let me know.

I'm no expert on this, just giving my thoughts. I wouldn't keep my snakes in a toxic treated area for at least 30 days. Not knowing how long it would take for the area to be safe, you want to give it adequate time to fade away naturally. Snakes are more sensitive to scents than we are. I'm not even sure I'd want them under the same roof as something so potentially dangerous. Better to be safe than sorry. I'd say give it at least 30 days, again just my thoughts.

pyrethrin is a pesticide made from chyrsanthemum cineriifolium that can cause neurological shut down. i'm not real sure about the re entry for homes, but in a greenhouse setting the re entry period is 12 hours. i'm assuming you're using a fogger. the insects should be dead within 20 minutes. to be as safe as possible i'd give it a full 24 hours and then vaccum and then wait another 24 hours. all of this information is on the msds printed on the pesticide.

re-entry time for humans is 12 hours. information printed is for humans.

Flea powder is based on Permethrin, which is quite toxic to reptiles.
Provent a mite has it at a 0.5% concentration- and it is still quite toxic.

Flea powder has the same active ingredient at a 10% concentration... get the drift? Not a good idea.

I'd go with the 30 days to be on the safe side, if at all possible.

Crisis averted... Managed to convince my mother that a pesticide harmful to fish, snakes, and cats is not a smart idea when my pets consist of fish, snakes, and a cat.

Thank you all for your input. Excellent idea on the 30 days' quarantine--if she had insisted, I would have moved everyone upstairs for that time. I think that also helped her decide, as my stepdad is terrified of snakes and did not want them upstairs.
