Question about a certain Tegu ...

LostNFound

We are finding ourselves replacing his water 5 - 10 times a day. It's getting a little old. He is a digger and he finds it necessary to bury his water bowl, COMPLETELY. Elevating it doesn't work because he will bury the whole structure OR knock it down he has also purposefully dumped water bowls, large and smaller alike, so many times I can't even bother to count anymore .... any suggestions?? PLEASE?!?! anyone?!?! LoL

I have a few butt headed lizards like him and I have switched to huge weighted water bowls with them, but they are smaller than a tegu- you made need a lot of weight to stop him, lol!! Does he belly flop in them too? I have a few of those nothing like a loud splash in the middle of the night!

You can't stop a tegu from digging, as they are animals that like to burrow, and even return to their own burrows occassionally. I have a Tegu, Reeko, who is the exact same way - he's constantly digging, kicking up dirt and making a mess of his cage. It's normal - do you take him out for some free roam time? Perhaps free roam, could help burn off some energy he has. Either way - I find myself changing Reeko's water two to three times a day, tops. Even if you weigh down the bowl, depending on the type of bedding you have, he will just make the water filthy again by flinging his substrate.

Can you build a divider between the digging area and a clean area? Maybe even divide the cage into halves or 1/3 / 2/3 with a raised section for the water bowl, and a ground level digging area? Not like just build the bowl up, but make a whole, separate section. OR what about a solid wall with a higher up hole or door he has to go through to get to the side with the water?
